I SEE THE LIGHT,

A new Hot Tuna album is always something to look forward too and this one does not disappoint in the least. It's the electric band taken from the last Furthur festival tour. Jormas voice just seems to keep getting more expressive as time goes by. Stand out tracks include Third Week in Chelsa,Watch The North Wind Rise and the 11 minute plus Funky #7. The only minor downside is that on the old Dead fave song Big Railroad Blues Michael Falzarano sings the lead vocals..I would have loved to hear Jorma sing this one otherwise a great cd and one all fans should add to their collections

I get the overall impression from this live recording that the band is having fun; they enjoy what they're doing and they're good at it. Jorma plays an amplified acoustic guitar most of the time; the other guitarists and the piano is electric. It works. One of my favorites is the "Water Song." The song often repeats a wonderful guitar-bass riff that sort of ripples and shimmers. Upon close listen, I hear that Casady never quite plays the bass line the same way--so it remains interesting to the ear. This is easy to listen to and enjoyable.

Six String Heaven,

This is a great album. It probably won't convert the non-believers out there, but for fans of Hot Tuna and this type of music, it is a wonderful showcase. The jams are expansive but never 'too much' and the vocals and song selection are outstanding. Being a live album, there is a bit more spontinaity and looseness than a studio album, which adds to the enjoyment. Put it on and kick back and enjoy!

Longtime Inspiration,

This terrific live album features the many styles of Hot Tuna's talent, from 60s-style acid to Rev. Gary Davis blues to Jorma's own introspective folk ballads. The 20-minute stretch of sound from tracks 4 through 8 inclusive--Third Week in the Chelsea, Embryonic Journey, I Am the Light of this World, Watch the North Wind Rise, Water Song--is the highlight of the cd, and I've been listening to it almost daily for the last six months. There's a wonderful moment in the gospel-influenced Watch the North Wind Rise when the music seems to stop, then picks up again with a terrific Pete Sears organ riff. Everytime I hear it I'm grateful for these great musicians and the fact that they're still in action after all these years. To Jorma, Jack, Pete and the rest: thanks so much, guys! Keep doing it!

Brought me back to the days after Jerry passed away and the Furthur tours had just started...all the family members were touring and celebrating what was and what would eventually be. Jorma comes through and gives us a great sampling of where Hot Tuna was at that point in time....
Great CD and it still amazes me when I receive these purchases just a few days after I have ordered it! Keep up the good work Amazon.... peaceout

This was a great era for the electric band. I really like this show, especially the instrumentals "Embryonic Journey" and "Water Song." Very energetic "Big R&R Blues" too. So many highlights. This is a show worth owning.

One of the greatest performances I ever heard!,

The performance begins with a beautiful acoustic ballad: Kaukonen's "I see the light", one of the greatest psychedelic song in history, that first appeared on the album "Phospohoreshent rat", with great fincerpicking solos.
Then we have onother psychedelic jem, "Been so long", one of Hot Tuna's first singles, written by Jorma too. "True religion",a great blues original by Kaukonen, follows. It apeared on both albums "Hot Tuna" and "Burgers". "Third week in the chelsea" is a beautiful acoustic song about what Jorma thought when the Jefferson Airplane split. Everybody who knows Kaukonen of course knows "Embryonic Journey" too, the great fingerpicking piece that made him be the greatest guitar player in the 60's. The version of Gary Davis song "I'm the light of this world" on this performance is not very good. The best versions of this song are QUAH or "Splashdown" ones. "Water Song" is one of the greatest original fingerpicking songs, and this version is just perfect. "Gypsy Fire" is maybe the best original song by guitarist-singer Michael Falzarano, and the kayboard and guitar solos are absolutely great! "Hypnotation blues" is BB King blues kind of songs. Same thing about "Just My Way" and "Big Railroad Blues" The last one is a great classic for "America's Choice" fans: "Funky #7", a bues-acid-rock song written by Kaukonen and Casady, that after some rock furios jamming becomes an incredible jazz improvisation. The only weak point is "Watch the North Wind Rise", a song that I never liked. |
