Book Description

June 5, 2012 Dragonfury (Book 2)

Homicide detective Angela Keen thrives on the city’s rough streets. But when she becomes the prize of all prizes in the dragon-shifter world due to her “high-energy” status, she gets more than she bargained for. Kidnapped by Lothair of the Razorback clan, Angela barely survives captivity before managing to escape. Hurt and alone with nowhere to hide, she faces certain death when Lothair uses the trace energy she leaves in her wake to hunt her down. But before he can reach her, a mystery dragon-shifter intervenes and saves Angela’s life.

Now a guest of the Nightfury clan, Angela regains her strength as her rescuer, Rikar, the last living frost dragon, gradually breaks down her mistrust. Surrendering to her desire for Rikar, but still uncertain of her feelings, Angela goes against his wishes and agrees to be used as bait to lure Lothair into the open. As the battle commences, the true struggle comes from within: Will Angela return home to the life she loves, or forsake it all to be with Rikar?

Editorial Reviews

Review

FURY OF ICE will take you on a chilly ride of dragon fights and dragon passions. Great characters make this story worthwhile and the easy flow of dialogue and action kept me interested until the very end. ~ Tynga's Reviews

4.5 out of 5 stars! "...these Dragon Shifters are alpha males you can enjoy. I truly enjoyed them and I highly recommend this book." ~ Under the Covers Book Blog

"...I am just completely hooked on this series! The dragon shifters in this world are fascinating and I cannot get enough of them." ~ Bookworm's Haven

About the Author

As the only girl on all-guys hockey teams from age six through her college years, Coreene Callahan knows a thing or two about tough guys and loves to write about them. Call it kismet. Call it payback after years of locker room talk and ice rink antics. But whatever you call it, the action better be heart stopping, the magic electric, and the story wicked good fun.

After graduating with honors in psychology and working as an interior designer, Callahan finally succumbed to her overactive imagination and returned to her first love: writing. And when she’s not writing, she is dreaming of magical worlds full of dragon-shifters, elite assassins, and romance that’s too hot to handle. Callahan currently lives in Canada with her family and her writing buddy, a fun-loving golden retriever.

I've decided this series is going to be a guilty pleasure for me. Why guilty? Oh, let me count the ways...Not to harp on the obvious, but Fury of Ice and its predecessor, Fury of Fire, borrow heavily from the most popular PNR series. Mythology, language, evil plot, names...you name it, there is something reminiscent of another series. Originality is not the strong point for this author. No, Ms. Callahan shines in her character development. The reader is offered free reign to the psyche of these warrior dragons, and it sucks me in, and keeps me wanting more.

Very Brief Synopsis - In Fury of Ice, the book begins where Fury of Fire left off. Rikar is desperately searching for Homicide detective Angela Keen, who has been taken by the Razorbacks for nefarious purposes. Rikar knows the level of evil Angela is facing, and he is absolutely frantic to locate her. And see, this is where the author nails it. The pain and anxiety radiate from Rikar, and his anguish is palpable.

In a nice twist, Angela saves herself by attacking Lothaire, the Razorback who took her, and escapes. Just as Lothaire locates her again, Rikar swoops in and takes her back to the Nightfury complex. Angela has been brutalized by Lothaire during the short time he held her captive. She is traumatized. Rikar is devastated and out for the kill.

What worked for me - Rikar - So protective, so loving. He is so cautious with Angela, wanting her with his whole body and soul, but afraid of scaring her off. He lets her set the pace of their physical relationship, giving her all of the power...so sexy.

Angela - My kind of heroine. Angela is smart, savvy and a survivor. She feels the pull from Rikar, knows he cares for her and instinctively knows he will never hurt her.

4.0 out of 5 stars ~~ Undeniable ~~ Powerful ~~ Addictive. May 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Welcome to back to Washington State.

If you read the first installment, Fury of Fire, then you are already familiar with the characters; if not you really should check it out. This book picks up immediately following Fury of Fire (Dragonfury Series #1). This review contains spoilers for Fury of Fire (Dragonfury Series #1). I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read it yet, but WoW~~~~.
This is a primal example of a paranormal romance.

The author has created a group of characters and fine-tuned their individual personalities so well that you experience their emotions as your own. The struggles, the heartbreak, everything is so very well written that each event drags you fully into the experience. I read this entire book in a single day; couldn't put it down. I am glad the next installment, Fury of Seduction (Dragonfury Series #3), is coming soon.

Rikar is the last of his kind; a frost dragon shifter, an all-male race born of human females. As 2nd in command of the Nightfury dragon clan it is his duty to protect humankind. Just great he seemed to be following in Bastian's footsteps. He had only met the female once...and now he felt the bond between them; it is ~~ Undeniable ~~ Powerful ~~ Addictive.

When, his female, Angela Keene, a homicide detective, is kidnapped by the enemy he will do anything to save her.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Icy Hero is oh so Hot. June 3, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Even knowing what to expect this time around, it still took me a bit to settle into Fury of Ice and get used to the author channeling J R Ward - that brand-name dropping slangy voice which readers either love or hate - though I'd have been a bit happier if the women in the story leading lady Angela and next up leading lady Tiana didn't speak BDB too. But once I was able put that into the background, I actually ended up enjoying Fury of Ice.

Yes, Callahan's dragon shifter world is still an amalgamation of at least three other popular brotherhood of immortals series - so like the lovechild of Adrian's vampire Midnight Breed, and Cooke's dragon shifting Pyr fostered by Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood - but what is lacking in the originality of the world-building is made up for by the characters and their relationships. I am a sucker for male bonding, so I am happy that in addition to giving us a main romance and the set up for the next one, Fury of Ice also adds some new dragons to the Nightfury clan and starts building some relationships between these new 'brothers' as well as allowing us to get to know some of the background characters better.

I liked the romance between homicide detective Angela and ice dragon Rikar in Fury of Ice much better than one for Myst and Bastian in first book, Fury of Fire - I had a hard time getting past mating equaling death sentence for the heroine for much of the previous book. While I am hugely hero-centric and Rikar is a great leading man - protective yet patient, making sure to honor his battered heroine and allowing her to more past her victimization to again become the warrior that she is- I actually really liked Angela too.

I didn't like this book. The author drops F-bombs frequently. The prose is basic and boring, lacking elegance or grace. And you can see upcoming events a mile away.

The book had tremendous potential - I am a Sci Fi and PNR fan, especially Dragon Sci Fi and was very interested in the premise of humans shape shifting into dragons and all the different types of dragons in this world. I did like the descriptions of the sensation of changing into a dragon and the various powers and abilities. And the varieties dragons and their quirks and idiosyncrasies was well done. But the crude language and the wooden writing style was too much of a distraction.

I am definitely in the minority today - I thought "Twilight" was also poorly written and wooden but clearly with the millions and millions of copies sold many people didn't care. It seems like the authors of today's popular romance lit are going for the "fast money" with strong, romantic male characters and strong but "damsel in distress" female characters and don't really care if the writing is lacking, as long as it get the female pulse going.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read
The second book kept the energy of the first and added a little more to the big picture. A little bit of the same boy meets girl in the first book but still a good read.

I again enjoyed this book greatly and again the only bad thing I really have to say is I just think there is too MUCH swearing. It is just over the top in my opinion.
