Book Description

Nikki is a cougar shifter living in a werewolf world. When she's promised as a mate to a wolf shifter named Merrick, the fur flies. Cats are solitary and proud. No way will she be tamed, not even if Merrick’s touch drives her insane with need.

But Merrick has wanted Nikki for a long time and there's no way he’s letting her go. He’ll use every dark and erotic trick he knows to seduce her body...and then win her heart.

This short story is offered by New York Times bestselling author, Anya Bast. Fury is part one of a two part series. Tranquility is the sequel. These titles are highly erotic and meant for those 18 years or older.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Concept - REALLY Bad Execution October 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I haven't read anything previously by Anya Bast, so I have no idea if FURY is part of an ongoing series or something the author is writing separately to release as just the two interrelated short stories (see TRANQUILITY).

That being said, I liked the concept of the shifters, of being a Shadow, of the OtherKin in general. FURY revolves around a main hero, Merrick, who is an alpha werewolf, and Nikki, who happens to be a werecougar that the pack elders want to make Queen. Hot sex ensues, followed by the inevitable HEA filled with more hot sex.

As I said, I did enjoy the concept of the story, and I probably would have moved that to REALLY liked if not for two things. One, although I recognize the "I-just-met-you-but-want-to-sex-you-up-now" plot device, especially in stories involving shapeshifters who seem to "recognize" their mates upon meeting, just a tad more introduction before the horizontal tango would have been nice. And secondly, holy crow, this story badly needed an editor before it went up! I know Ms. Bast has published a bunch of stories through large-name publishers, but due to the lack of editing, I'm guessing this wasn't one of them.

So overall, a great concept - I'd definitely be interested in reading a full-length novel or novella starring the OtherKin. Yet on the other hand, the horrible execution of this short tale kept me from loving it like I wanted to.

4.0 out of 5 stars A strange consept October 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked the way the story moved from scene to scene, place to place, form to form. The sex was hot and charged. The feelings raw with lust and desire, mentally I had to fill in a few blank spots, but its nice to use the imagination, thats what books are for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good plot November 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I admit at first I was a little leery. I didn't think it would be good for a short story but to my amazement it turned out to be really good. It has a good plot and interesting characters. I would recommend this story as well as Tranquility.

2.0 out of 5 stars No attention to basic detail. Like grammar. October 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I think there's a good plot to the story, but I'm debating whether or not I'm willing to read the second part to see how things develop for Nikki. I'll have to admit, I found myself cringing at the incredibly clichéd dialogue, and above all else, the mistakes in the text. Mistakes that wouldn't be acceptable even for a high school essay, much less an actual novella. So this is entertaining but not nearly the quality that I've read in other romance novelists.

3.0 out of 5 stars Anya Bast's neglected brainchild May 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I know it's a short story, but it reads like the middle of a good book, without the hassle of beginning or end. It's good, like everything she does, but not up to her usual standards and feels unpolished. 90% of Anya Bast books are better than this one. And I have a shelf full of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too good, not too bad April 21, 2012
By Avid X
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an example of a story where the concept was really good, but the execution not so much. The story starts off with Nikki (heroine) running away from two males and the impending responsibility of becoming alpha female to the Fury pack (town full of shifters, not just werewolves but were cats, too, of which she is one). Now, when they catch her, the two males, Roane and Merrick, brothers, apparently just decide that Merrick should have her and the plot settles into a nice 'lust at first sight' kind of 'let's just screw' sort of thing. In and of itself, the start isn't bad. Merrick wants her for his mate and as such intends to take leadership of the Fury pack. All of a sudden, halfway through the book, just when you think you're getting to the end of the story, a second separate plot rears its head with the introduction of a rival-town pack and the kidnapping of Roane.

I would almost have rather this been two stories. It certainly reads that way with the sudden shift between plot A and plot B being very jarring. The story telling itself was a little rocky and the numerous sex scenes all start off fairly hot and steamy, but then fizzle off as if the author a.) didn't know how to finish the scenes and so just wrapped it up, or b.) got bored with her own sex scenes and did whatever she had to to quickly wrap them up. There were some pretty consistent formatting errors all the way through the story and it could use some editing. Mostly, I wish the author would have slowed down in some places, gotten a little more comfortable writing the sex, and either separated out the plots into two short stories or mingled them a bit better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written March 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book had an interesting fantasy idea -- something instead of the standard warewolf or vampire. But, there is really not much of a story here, just a few sex scenes strung together.

The other problem is that the writing is just not very good and it looks like the author forgot to proofread it or have an editor review it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Furious December 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have never read another book from this author before this - but plan on looking for more in the future.

The chemical connection from the beginning of this book was highly charged.
It made sense from step to step.
Shape shifters' instincts and their mating was powerfully described and the sex was incredibly hot without being vulgar.

I wish Fury and Tranquility would be just a taste of an epic series of full-length novels.

The first red flag with this story is on the first page, where the author bothers to point out that it is an “unedited” story. Why would you do that? Read more
