5.0 out of 5 stars Silky songbird floats our boat!, August 18, 2000
This review is from: Fuse Blues (Audio CD)
Marty Elkin's CD "Fuse Blues" is the next best thing to being there!...and we've been fortunate enough to see her perform at various clubs in New York City. The CD gives one a real sense of being at one of these clubs with all the fine musicians that Marty works with. Her voice elicits a smoky, smooth-as-silk sound. Hauntingly original in her approach, Marty really puts her heart and soul into her songs and her voice sends out pictures that really transports one to another state of being as in "Never, Never Land". Marty is also blessed with a sense of humor that can ferret out the irony in particular songs and the wit of a piece as one can experience with the song that she composed: "Fuse Blues". The musicians who are jamming with her are exceptional and it's really good to hear Tardo Hammer on the piano again. All in all, we can certainly recommend this CD very highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning debut by a new voice to the jazz world!, May 22, 2002

This review is from: Fuse Blues (Audio CD)
A tour-de-force of vocal thrills awaits the listener on this stylish debut release that should not only win Marty Elkins new fans, but become a welcome addition to any listening library. At the outset, the uptempo opener, "Day In, Day Out" is immediately impressive. Ms. Elkins serves up a strong and satisfying vocal reading that perfectly compliments guitarist Greg Skaff and pianist Tardo Hammer who match her rhapsodic approach with great clarity and presence. Elkins also brings expressive warmth to the easy paced lyrics of "Stars Fell On Alabama". Backed by the muted trumpet of Herb Pomeroy during the melody and two tender solos by bassist Dennis Irwin and Skaff, the result is beautifully balanced and meticulously worked to a satisfying conclusion. On "Moonray/No Moon At All" her vocals sparkle with a witty light touch, while her bandmates are equally eloquent in support. Elkins' sensuous voice is also ideally suited on "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning", and she delivers the goods in a sensitive and intelligent rendition that's breathtaking from first note to last. Tenor saxophonist Houston Person is also featured on a extremely beautiful solo that goes straight to the soul. "As Long As I Live" is more playful and joyous with infectious vocals by Elkins, and two imaginative readings by Pomeroy and Skaff. Marty's lyrics are also light, free and unrestrained in a charming rendition of "When Your Lover Has Gone" over the piano less rhythm section of Pomeroy, Skaff, Irwin, and drummer Mark Taylor. Along with the remaining tunes, "Fuse Blues" is an outstanding collection of superior performances by Marty Elkins, a new voice to the jazz world who's talent I know won't remain a secret for very long.
