I had read FY on and off for about a few years. Although the story is cute and does breathe some life into the cliched "Traveller from another world" genre, it did get to be trying, especially with all the "Miaka" and "Tamahomeing" going on, not to mention very few scenes with the other characters, who are the ones that had more to give to the story if they were only...

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 9 - Lover (Paperback)
I just love the series Fushigi Yugi,I really do! To confess,I didn't even think of reading this series,it was my mom! yes,my mom who's 35 thank you very much,(hey,I'm only 11,okay, sue me!)I love All the characters but my really favorite that I ranked as a 15 out of 10 were Miaka,Tamahome,Chichri, and Nuriko.I really liked Nuriko (don't get any ideas!)until she/he died, but even though Nuriko was a man I thought of her as a woman and sort of half sister of Miaka and I thought to myself,"why did she half to die?! why, why, why?! and I cried and cried in my room. But not to be mean but I'm not happy with the way the ending turned out in this book. And you would to if you've read all the books I've read.(10 times each book)and I don't know why Ms.Wastase likes Nakago.(my mom called him Namatamago "raw egg" in Japanese this morning.)ha ha.I ABSOLUTLEY HATE HIM!!!HE'S SOOO HORRIBLE!!!!IF YOU SAW WHAT HE DID TO MIAKA AND I DON'T LIKE YUI EITHER..er....wait if you read this....without reading the book....AHHHHHHH!!!I'DOING IT AGAIN!!!I'M SPOILING THE FUN OUT OF READING THIS BOOK!!!I'M SO STUPID!!!!Sorry,I get carried away with stuff like that. But please try to undrstand what I feel.Fushigi Yugi is the most wonderful series EVER.PERIOD.And if that won't convince you this might:Fushigi Yugi is the most funny, tearful, wonderful, ect, and please take it from a complete manga "comic book in Japanese"reading maniac.I've read and tried 11 different manga series's but this overall is the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars The story continues., May 18, 2006
This review is from: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 9 - Lover (Paperback)
Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi: Lover (Viz Publications, 1993)

Fushigi Yugi has been getting darker and more complex with each episode; it's turrned into an epic fantasy under our very noses, and without us even noticing. Go figure.

Miaka and co., thwarted from summoning Suzaku, are now trying to get to the Shentso-Pao, an artifact of unknown type that will allow them a kind of backdoor to summoning Suzaku. Unfortunately, it'll also work for summoning Seiryu, so Yui and the Seiryu celestial warriors are after it as well, and they have a plan...

Somewhere along the way, this story-- previously a fun, kind of cute, little diversion-- got gripping. While it still handles things in a predictable kind of way for anyone who's ever heard a description of one of the old serial movies, it resists being episodic somehow. I'm still trying to figure out how Watase pulls that off. If you're already a manga fan, this is definitely a series worth picking up; if you're new to the world of manga, Fushigi Yugi would be an excellent starting point. What are you waiting for? ***

4.0 out of 5 stars Stressing, July 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 9 - Lover (Paperback)
After you finish this book, you will probably have mixed feelings. Mine were confused, stressed, and I thought the book made me freak out! All I gotta say is that this book is pretty good. It's not as good as the others, but the story is growing more and more. That's why people love these books, but anyways, I still recommend this book, because you have to read it before you read any other ones.

3.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Volume, December 13, 2003
This review is from: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 9 - Lover (Paperback)
I had read FY on and off for about a few years. Although the story is cute and does breathe some life into the cliched "Traveller from another world" genre, it did get to be trying, especially with all the "Miaka" and "Tamahomeing" going on, not to mention very few scenes with the other characters, who are the ones that had more to give to the story if they were only given the opportunity to do so.

I stopped reading it at the fifth volume and didn't look back until I got this volume from my sister.

At first I was completely neutral to it and was looking forward to being bored with the childish romance between Miaka and Tamahome.

So imagine my surprise when I found myself in the middle of an emtionally gripping and mature storyline!! I was so impressed I devoured the whole book and went out and bought the volumes I was missing.

This book made me like the series again and it also made me realize that I should have stuck through all the seemingly slow plotlines, since this story takes a while to get going. But when it does, it is satisfying.

The only problem I have with it is that it's too childish and can be trying (especially to older readers) and the heroine can be a bit of a git and can be very unlikeable at some points in the story.

I would recommend this series for teenage girls, but not women in their twenties, since it seems extremely immature and dated.
