5.0 out of 5 stars Another solid, best-selling volume
In the 5th volume of Fushigi Yugi manga, Miaka finds the last celestail warriors, and they go to retrieve Tamahome. Once they arrive for him, things go drastically downhill. This volume was really great. It broke my heart at the end, and I even broke down crying (I don't do that very often)! Plus my favorite character came in, ahem....uh, Chiriko. I guess.....^_^...

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-breaking Tama-baby, December 19, 2001

This review is from: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 5, Rival (Paperback)
In this volume, after finding all the celestial warriors of Suzaku, Miaka, Chichiri, and Tasuki go to bring Tamahome back. Once they arrive, they're in for a nasty surprise. Tama's been drugged...by Yui! It seems Yui got so jealous of Miaka, that she asked Nakago for a drug to keep Tamahome there and make him love Yui. Yui is reluctant to give Tama the drug (maybe she does have some humanity!), but when Tamahome's about to leave to meet Miaka, Yui finally gives him the drug, be kissing him (guess I was wrong about the humanity). Tamahome then hates Miaka, so much that he's bent on killing her. He loves Yui now. When Miaka first finds Tamahome, she doesn't know he's changed, until he smashes all the bones in her arm. Miaka is totally in shock, but she eventually lets go of Tamahome, and the Suzaku leave. The end of this volume made me cry, it was so sad. How can best friends get so jealous, they're willing to take lives for their selfishness? Miaka needs to smack Yui. Anyways, this volume was wonderful. The manga is even better than the Anime, so make sure you get this volume!

5.0 out of 5 stars Devoured in Mystery..., February 8, 2002
This review is from: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 5, Rival (Paperback)
I strongly suggest this manga for all of those who are Fans. Fushigi Yugi is a great masterpiece. Yu Watase has created a world where the reader feels the actions and pain of the characters. It is great and reveals certain aspects from reality. How far can you really go for love? In this heart-warming and heart-breaking book you'll find more than expected. Beware though, this book has a seriously traumatizing cliff hanger so if you order it make sure to get Book #6 too... REALLY TRUST ME!! Well, I hope you DO buy it 'cause I assure you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Volume 5 Continues in Style, November 13, 2001

This review is from: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 5, Rival (Paperback)
For those who are wondering whether or not to try out Fushigi Yuugi, I'll put in my two cents. The series is excellent, and volume five is one of the best yet. Compared to other graphic novels, Fushigi Yuugi as a series is funny, sad, and extremely addictive. In this volume, Miaka continues her journey to find all of her Celestial Warriors but runs into tragedy. You'll definitely need to read volumes 1-4 before reading volume five...so go to it! This story is too good to pass up! I already can't wait until volume 6 comes out...

Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi: Rival (ViZ, 2001)

Installment five in the long-running, insanely popular manga finds the last of the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku, but Miaka barely notices; she's too busy waiting for Tamahome to fulfill his promise that he'd return once all seven celestial warriors are gathered. Now here's the problem: Miaka's best friend Yui is also smitten with Tamahome, and will do anything in her power to make Tamahome forget Miaka ever existed...

more soap opera-esque fun from Yu Watase. She's come up with quite the roadblock this time, I have to say; if you're reading the series, no matter how slowly you're going, you'll rush out and buy volume six the second you finish this one, because it's that kind of cliffhanger. Which is naked emotional manipulation, of course, but then, that's what soap operas are all about, no?

If you liked the first four, you'll like this one. ***
