About the Author

A manga artist for nearly 20 years, Watase's debut came in 1989 at the age of 18 when her short story PAJAMA DE OJAMA (An Intrusion in Pajamas) appeared in the monthly Shôjo Comic manga anthology. Since then she has written and drawn some 50 volumes worth of different short stories and long-running manga series, including the fantastically popular FUSHIGI YÛGI, also available in English from VIZ. Her works have provided the basis for two television series, an OVA series, anime soundtrack CDs, and a string of novels.

One of Japan's most beloved manga series comes to life in this vivid, bonus-filled new edition of Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yugi (The Mysterious Play). Volume one of this "Viz Big" edition brings together the first three volumes of this incredible series into one convenient book -that's nearly 600 pages of pure, uninterrupted manga that will pull you in and never let you go.

Fushigi Yugi follows the story of a high-spirited, chipper Japanese junior high student named Miaka. She's just your average student, trying to find time for her friends while studying for high school entrance exams. One day at the National Library, Miaka and her best friend Yui find a mysterious book called The Universe of the Four Gods. Upon opening the book they are transported to ancient China where they meet a dashing, money-loving rogue named Tamahome. After becoming both separated and trapped in the book, Miaka and Yui's lives and fates are changed forever.

Miaka finds herself in a kingdom called Hong-Nan, where she meets up with Tamahome once again. After an unexpected run-in with the emperor Hotohori, Miaka discovers that she is the legendary Priestess of Suzaku, whom prophesy has said would come to the kingdom of Hong-Nan to protect it. As the priestess, Miaka must gather the seven constellations of Suzaku and summon the him so that he will grant her a wish.

Meanwhile, Yui finds herself in the kingdom of Qu-Dong, far away from home -and from Miaka. After being rescued from bandits by the hunky Nakago, Yui finds that she too is a priestess -but a priestess who will rival Miaka and fight against her in the upcoming battle. Yui, as the Priestess of Seiryu, must gather her own collection of constellations to summon Seiryu for the country of Qu-Dong.

I love Fushigi Yugi and this VizBig edition is brilliant. The cover is sturdy the paper in the inside is way better than the regular manga paper and since it's bigger you can better see Yuu Watase's artwork which is amazing and the binding is good also. This covers the 1st three volumes and even though it's 572 pages it goes by quickly. A great deal from Viz for a low price.

I think everyone has probably already covered the actual story told in this collection, so I'm focusing a bit on the actual product/concept behind VizBig releases.

While collecting new series one volume at a time is really thrilling, for series that hold a lot of nostalgia or are already completed, I think the VizBig editions really are the best. It's a lot easier to collect entire series all at once (and cheaper as a whole), as well as just generally having a better quality of product. This is the fourth series I have purchased in VizBig format, and I have yet to be disappointed.

In the case of the Fushigi Yugi VizBig releases, they all have gold foiled logos on the cover and spine. The books are also sturdier overall than single volumes, and have the added bonus of colour insert/artwork at the end of each book. In the first volume, this includes a colour version of the first page of chapter one in the original Japanese.

The translation has also taken a different direction with VizBig than in previous releases of this series. The three-volume book utilises a glossary of sound effect translations in the back. In the past, the sound effects would have been edited out and replaced with the equivalent English onomatopoeia taking their place. Since this can be disruptive to the flow of artwork, I actually prefer the glossary method. There's also a pronunciation guide for Chinese-to-Japanese names

It has everything: romance, love triangles, action, adventure, fantasy, magic, mystical creatures, comedy, tragedy, the works! This is the series that got me hooked on manga, and I will never forget it

UPDATE January 11, 2014: After many back-and-forths with the publisher, Viz, and Amazon, I'm happy to report that ALL volumes of Fushigi Yugi VIZBIG editions are now fixed. Though it took a while to resolve, both sides were working diligently towards a solution. As of now all of Volumes 1-6 have the correct content. Finally I am able to read this classic manga!

HOWEVER, if you had already purchased a copy, you may still have a defective copy in your account. This may also be true if you purchased a copy, got a refund and then repurchased later. In this case you will need to get the book updated in your account.

The suggested way to do this is to turn on Automatic Book Update on your Manage Your Kindle page ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/digital/fiona/manage?ie=UTF8&ref_=sa_menu_myk&signInRedirect=1&#versionUpdate )and then check for updates on your device. If that doesn't work, delete the book and try to download a new copy.

If you still don't get a good copy, then contact Kindle Support with your order number and request that they send you the updated version of the book. This is what I had to do and within a couple of hours they had sent a new and correct copy.
