Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This collection of ten essays examines the current uses of technology in medicine and speculates on its use into the 21st century. Technological breakthroughs and managing information and service are the two broad areas addressed here. Specific topics range from bloodless robotic surgery to training future physicians. The authors of each essay are well qualified to address their respective topics. Editor Pickover, a columnist for Discover magazine, seeks "to provide information that students, laypeople, scientists, politicians, and physicians will find of practical value today as they make personal, educational, and policy decisions about their needs in the coming decades." Unfortunately, the book fails to meet this goal completely. The essays are interesting but tend to be technical; the majority read like chapters from a textbook. The book is thus better targeted to medical students, physicians, and scientists. Recommended for large academic libraries.?Kathleen Low, California State Lib., Sacramento
