Following a tumultuous 2012, Miami-born singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor Jason Derulo is gearing up for his comeback. Back in January 2012, Derulo suffered a catastrophic neck injury while rehearsing for a world tour to support his sophomore album Future History. Editorial Reviews

Future History finds Jason Derulo moving seamlessly from ultra-sexy urban dance tracks to poppy love songs, once again offering up a unique genre-blurring blend of varied sounds deeply rooted in pop. This time, production is handled by The Fliptones, including the first single and instant summer anthem "Don't Wanna Go Home," as well as hitmakers J.R. Rotem, Frank E, The Dream, and Eman.

The casual Jason Derulo fan had to be concerned by the number of singles Derulo released prior to the official release of his sophomore set Future History. Future History, unlike his debut effort Jason Derulo materialized as a full length affair as opposed to an EP. Every week it seemed iTunes (and all digital music stores) issued a new little piece of the parent album. The problem was that the 'pieces of the puzzle' seemed merely average at times. Promo single "Don't Wanna Go Home" was a hit, though not like Derulo's acclaimed #1 single "Whatcha Say." When examined as an entire entity aside from the choices or number of released singles, Future History is solid, yet it paints Derulo as a more generic artist who truly needs to define his artistic identity.

"Don't Wanna Go Home" opens the album fashionably but as implied earlier, it us a less compelling single than any of the singles from Derulo's debut. "Don't Wanna Go Home" is typical electro-dance infused R&B, but its production by The Fliptones is a bit overwrought. The cut itself lacks a "connect." Another digitally released single "It Girl" is a more promising cut and a smart contrast to the opener. Characterized by the use of acoustic guitars, "It Girl" exhibits an adult contemporary vibe and shows off Derulo's vocal prowess. Predictable, "It Girl" is solid nonetheless. "Breathing," produces by DJ Frank E is a typical Europop influenced dance cut. The cut reminds R&B fans of Chris Brown's "Yeah 3X" or "Beautiful People" from his F.A.M.E. (Deluxe Edition) album.

With his sophomore album, Future History, Jason Derulo tries to make a name for himself and cross over into something of a pop-dance area. This album is a fresh sound from the artist, with some great dance hits that have you bopping your head along with the music as you drive in the car or sit at your desk. With lots of samples from other hits of the past, like Robin S's "Show Me Love" (on the lead single, "Don't Wanna Go Home", also involving some Harry Belafonte), I couldn't help but notice how much of the album is composed of other great hits. It's somewhat distracting at times, but with poppy, catchy music, it's a fun album to listen to.

Some of my favorite tracks are "Don't Wanna Go Home", great for dancing in your seat during rush hour, and "Make It up as We Go", which has a great club feel. One let down for me was "It Girl", with lyrics that are vain and nonsensical. The strength of this album are the pulsing club sounds and beat. As long as you ignore some subpar lyrics and occasional heavy use of autotune, what you have is a pretty decent follow up album to one of my favorite albums of 2010.

Hits: "Don't Wanna Go Home", "Make It Up As We Go"
Misses: "It Girl", "Dumb"

Jason Derulo has great talent on his hands. His voice is amazing, but for his next album, I can only hope that the autotune is toned down and we get a return to the R&B that made his self-titled debut so amazing. Still, this is a pretty great album that is worth a listen.

Jason definately has the vocals, moves and appearance of a superstar. His young R & B Pop flavor offers a variety of songs that bring balance to this release. The tracks come together like a story and say alot about the versatility of his style. He has that young Usher, It factor, and anyone who truly knows music can certainly identify the characteristics that I am referencing. Definately expecting big things from this young artist. Jordan Sparks has good taste and vice versa.
