Editorial Reviews

2007 marked the 40th anniversary of the formation of The Doors and their explosive self-titled first LP, one of rock music's most stunning debuts. Rhino continues its landmark celebration of the band's enduring legacy and their extraordinary catalog with a brand new compilation packing twenty of their most definitive hits on one must-have disc. All of the classic songs boast sonically superior 40th Anniversary Mixes by The Doors' original engineer/producer Bruce Botnick, and each of the group's six seminal studio albums recorded before lead singer Jim Morrison's death is represented. The project was produced under the supervision of surviving Doors John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek in collaboration with Botnick

I bought this on a whim to see how improved the sound is compared to the original CD versions that I own. A remarkable improvement in the transparency and crispness of the songs. Well worth hearing. As far as cashing in - come on - no one is forcing anyone to buy this CD, but I am glad that these kind of sonic improvements can be made. The End is cut to fit CD running time - consider it a bonus! 79 minutes of The Doors in vastly improved sound at mid-price rates 5 stars from me.

The mix and improved sound of these classics is incredible. The sound is so crisp that you here the guitar pick hitting the strings of the guitar. The rocker "Roadhouse Blues" mix sends new chills up the spine. Get it!!!

Although I have known the doors music throughout my Life, I have never purchased any Doors CD's, or any of their music before this CD...I recently started watching any footage of them I could find on the internet, and listening to their music like crazy. I never knew the story behind the band, or about Jim's death and now I am quite obsessed with them!!!! I thought this CD was a good place to start, though I wish" Five to One" was on it-then it would be complete. I will probably end up purchasing more of their music, but this is a great starting point and the sound is great.

B-E-W-A-R-E because a LOT of the songs on this album have been remixed and/or have repetitive over-dubbing of Morrison's voice or added sound/vocal tracks. It's almost as though Phil Spector got into the mixing booth and tried adding his signature "Wall of Sound" to every song. It's horrible. This manipulation of the originals ruins most of the songs as the band intended they be heard. And they have taken out most of the "objectionable" parts of some of the classic songs, particularly on "The End" by replacing Morrison's rant about killing his father and his ravaging his mother in the original with bird chirps and crickets sounds (I am not kidding!). But it is politically correct now!!! Can't have anything offensive on our modern music of the "future". Morrison's original shock-value has been sacrificed just like his unknown solider. Plus, no "Best of The Doors" collection could ever be complete without "20th Century Fox", but since that might be perceived as sexist and offensive, we can't have it on this album! Again, this collection is a horrible remake intended primarily for millenials who prefer repetitive sounds and have 30 second attention spans - stay with the originals! I wish I could take this back for a full refund.

I guess I dont "love" the doors or I would get the 5.1 surround Perceptions- to many bad songs on thier albums- but I first heard weird scenes inside the goldmine in germany when I was in 7th grade (71-72?) which is essentially the doors greatest hits- it sounds good- but this sounds better- problem is they dont have 2 of the best doors songs When the musics over and the end. yes the end is listed but its not really the end- to bad because the first 4 minuetes of it sounds great- the real song is about 11 min. long. anyway this disc sounds great. For me its worth haveing both this and greatest hits u.s version because this disc is Long and greatest hits is two shorter discs.I can recomend this it sounds great- but it really cant be essential without "When the musics over" or the whole song of "The end" they should have left off a few of the shorter songs and included those 11 min. gems. edit+EDITT=EEDDDIIITTT: I just got the very best of the doors - 2 cd 1 dvd and its the same remaster as this w/ twice the songs (the end and when the mussics over on the same disc) at about the same price you should get that if you can. IT ALSO HAS THE SAME cover photo.

I enjoy compilations of the Doors as much as the next person, but this is basically The Very Best Of The Doors scaled down to just one CD with even an edit of The End. Why? I have no idea. You never ever edit The End! Just buy the 2-CD set that hilights the Doors' best which features the new 40 anniversary mixes which sound absolutely fabulous. And I'm glad they featured The Ghost Song as well. That works good side by side with The Doors Legacy - The Absolute Best. Those are the ones to get, but this scaled back version just doesn't cut it.

i have owned several doors compilation lp`s and cd`s. in fact, i still have a copy of DOORS 13. I WILL KEEP IT SHORT AND MENTION THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS SUBTLE AND NOT SO SUBTLE DIFFERENCES ON THIS DISC. BREAK ON THROUGH- has the line "SHE GETS HIGH " WHICH USED TO BE CENSORED.A FEW OF THE SONGS HAVE A SLIGHTLY LONGER INTRO OR ENDING. FOR EXAMPLE, "HELLO I LOVE YOU " SEEMS TO BE ABOUT 12 SECONDS LONGER THAN I RECALL..THE CD IS MASTERED VERY NICELY- I PICKED IT UP, AND I HAVE ALL THESE SONGS MANY TIMES OVER.
