Third in Jumpman/TimeJumpers series, August 31, 2011
This review is from: The Future Is Unknown (Timejumpers) (Paperback)
One thing that confused me about this book initially is that I was looking for the third installment of the JumpMan series (search for JumpMan Rule #1 and JumpMan Rule #2). It appears the author (or publisher) re-released those books under the TimeJumpers name (someone please confirm). As it stands, my son (and I) read the first two JumpMan books and this book takes up right where the second leaves off.
If your child's school participates in the Renaissance Home Connect Accelerated Reader program, this book does not have an AR test - even though the first two books do (under the JumpMan series name). There are ways to get the "points" for it, because once reading the first two books your child will want to finish the series.
Another point about the Renaissance program: The first two books are listed around a 4.6 reading grade level - this is very misleading as the books are targeted at teenagers, and deal with issues and concepts that teenagers are more likely to understand. It was explained to me that there is a difference between "reading level" and "interest level" - for example, the book "The Color Purple" is only at a 4th grade reading level, but the interest level is definitely adult.
My son is nine years old, in the fourth grade - luckily he is an advanced reader but I could see where this book series might lose some at his age. Personally, I read the book after him and, as an adult, found it a fun read (although definitely a youth's book).
As far as the story - it's a fun one, although the first two books are better. It gets a bit sloppy in places, but my son had no complaints. As someone who reads a lot of science fiction, there are some areas I had to just roll my eyes - but it's more about the story than the science. I'm still giving this four stars because it completes the series in a satisfying manner.
