This review is from: Future Trends in Microelectronics: Up the Nano Creek (Hardcover)
The papers in this book show exciting trends in microelectronics circa 2007. They are written at a level readily accessible to grad students and researchers in applied physics and solid state electronics.
Steady progress is reported in the development of terahertz lasers, for the range of frequencies 1-10 THz. These are improvements over existing quantum cascade lasers for those frequencies. Also, for photovoltaics, noted expert Martin Green reports on developments using quantum confinement of silicon within a dielectric matrix, resulting in silicon quantum dots. This allows for the later systematic controlling of the bandgap and hence its use in solar cell structures that only use silicon. This would have advantages over using GaAs solar cells, like less toxicity, and cheaper materials. And also the ability to use the global expertise and manufacturing plants [fabs] for silicon. Superlattices are mentioned in many of the papers. My former adviser, Tom McGill, was one of the key innovators of superlattices. Sadly, I saw no mention of his papers in the book. |
