Book Description

May 14, 2002
Following the publication of his seminal Black Fire: The Making Of An American Revolutionary, in 1994, Peery, with almost 60 years in the 'movement' behind him, crossed the country meeting with individuals and groups, talking and listening. In these journeys he discussed questions about capitalism, communism, and fascism; about poverty in the midst of plenty; about what makes our era different from all others. This lively new work distills these experiences and challenges readers to ask new questions and imagine a cooperative America no longer limited by scarcity.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Peery combines 60 years experience in the revolutionary movement with the intellectual achievement of summarizing it politically and theoretically. -- Lew Rosenbaum, People's Tribune

About the Author

Nelson Peery grew up in rural Minnesota, the son of a postal service worker in the only African-American family in the town. His education during the depression was supplemented by a year hoboing where he gained experience that no school would teach about racism and the American economy. His book, "Black Fire," describes these years and his years in the U.S. Army. He wrote "Black Fire" because no one had ever told the story about the black soldier during World War II and he wanted to set the record straight. He also wanted to show how a person becomes a revolutionary fromtheir life experience and the conclusions they come to about what must be done to make our country worthwhile. Nelson Peery returned from the war determined to continue his political activity. His other works include: co-author of "Moving Onward From Racial Division to Class Unity," a pamphlet about the historical evolution of racism; "African American Liberation and Revolution in the U.S;" essays such as "School Days," in the book, "Teaching for Social Justice — A Democracy and Education Reader," and "The Birth of a New Modern Proletariet," in the book, "Cutting Edge," and many more writings on African American liberation, the global economy and the vision of a new cooperative America and world. Nelson Peery has over 60 years in the revolutionary movement.
