The M's Future Women is a near classic CD. Songwriting is very strong. You won't forget Future Women, Shawnee Dupree, Plan Of The Man or Going Over It. There are hints of T-Rex, Ultra Vivid Scene and Velvet Underground.

This is a band to watch.

Melodious vocals by three capable singers, distorted guitars and sometimes trivial lyrics partly describe the retro sound of The M's (Josh Chicoine, Joey King, Steve Versaw and Robert Hicks), but only partly. This is a band that is as capable churning out easy-on-the-ears '60s pop as it is doing hazy ballads ("Light I Love"), slinky guitar licks next to heavy riffs ("Never Do This Again") and fun punk-pop rockers ("Underground"). (Note: "Never Do This Again" features a pile-driver guitar riff that Pearl Jam must have heard and cloned on their song "Life Wasted" from 2006's Pearl Jam; no doubt PJ copied the less-heralded M's, since "Future Women" was released before PJ's self-titled CD that year.) Overall, "Future Women" is one of the best CDs of 2006, and the title track qualifies as one of its top songs, though I can't figure out what it's about. The song, however, is a foot-stomping sing-along that ends with an irresistable guitar hook accompanied by pounding drums.

The lively "Plan of the Man" opens this ultra-catchy record with the plea, "I'm tryin' hard now just to understand, how I fell into the plan of the man." If that song questions the validity of living through the everyday doldrums that we all must, the album's closer, "Darling Lucia," might be the band's attempt at living a worthwhile life through freedom and self-expression. Catchy beyond belief, from the heart and oozing personal redemption through every Beatlesque note, "Darling Lucia" is one of the best songs I've heard in a while. Though the lyrics remain mostly indecipherable throughout, the "You can start it all over" refrain (with its Oasis-like ending) pounds the message home that a new way of living is possible. It's a transcendent song that is one of the M's best, and overall, this is a record that solidifies The M's as one of the best up-and-coming bands out there.
