Editorial Reviews

Completing the trilogy of The Plus 2 s, Moreno/Domenico/Kassin+2, Futurismo nimbly threads together the playful lyrics and experimental sound of its predecessors Music Typewriter
(2001) and Sincerely Hot (2004). The Plus +2 s arrive on the scene again, however, this time the playing field is a bit different. Alongside bands like Bonde de Role and CSS, the Plus +2 s take their place with a new crop of Brazilian artists that demonstrate that music from other cultures and in other languages is no longer considered outside of the mainstream of indie rock.
The album includes tracks that feature collaborative work with Sean O Hagan (High Llamas) who co-wrote and sings with Kassin on ''Ya Ya Ya'' and ''Back Bow,'' and additional instrumentation and production from John McEntire (Tortoise) on the song ''Lake Line.''
Kassin, the album s main songwriter, producer, and lead singer, is known for his bass playing and avant-gardism. With Futurismo, he skirts the expectations of those who associate
him most with experimentalism. He has created a classic sounding album that
reflects the heart of his own record collection. It overflows with a mix of samba, garage rock, and bolero, all of which is inflected with electronic flourishes and bubbles of bossa nova:
''The title Futurismo is actually the opposite of what this album is about. If you see the cover, you ll notice that it s nothing near futuristic! The cover has mold on it! I wanted to surprise those who predicted that I d do some thing really modern (laugh).'' With a rising profile as a producer for popular Brazilian artists, including Bebel Gilberto
and Marisa Monte, this album closes the Plus 2 trilogy, but opens up a new realm of musical possibilities for the leader of Brazil s new garde.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brazil's +2 just keep getting better, May 11, 2008
This review is from: Futurismo (Audio CD)
This is the third (and possibly best) album by the Brazilian avant-pop trio of Domenico Lancellotti , Moreno Veloso and producer-guitarist Kassin -- collectively known as the "+2".

Each of the +2-ers has made a mark for themselves working with various artists on and off the Brazilian pop radar, but Kassin may be cutting the largest swath, producing records for a wide variety of younger artists, including work with Bebel Gilberto, Thalma de Freitas and the Orquestra Imperial (which is more or less an expanded version of the +2 band...)

Here on his own "solo" album, Kassin fully explores the smooth, swank, easygoing Latin-pop-lounge vibe he's worked on elsewhere, and the results are simply yummy. Soft-salsa, samba, funk, dub, surf, rock and electronica all merge together with the delicious, all-encompassing ease that typifies the best of Brazilian pop. There's are wide variety of textures and tones, and all of it sounds alluring and fresh. One of the most subtle and subtly challenging Brazilian pop albums of recent vintage, the sound of a younger generation branching out and finding a global audience. Well worth checking out!
