The convergence of everything Donut - the instrumental mayhem, changes and slight bouts of chaos from earlier efforts (replete with brass) is tight and focused, wandering into the sharp metal riffage and pop sesnisiblity indicative of the Sissi era. Instrumentally it's thoughtfully dynamic, hard, twisted and fun - the ideal broth for the wonderfully wretched chunks of Antona's lyrical stew. Perhahps you have to be a Donut fan of earlier years to truly appreciate this enhanced, somewhat full circle return. Three Sisters was a fine comeback, but Fuzz seems to dig back a bit more and for this listener that's a great thing. My only concern is Chet - his rollers are looking tired these days, i'm sure his poetry is still relevant.

Thanks to the introduction of Alice Donut in the 80's, by Biafra and his indy label Alternative Tentacles, I finally had the financial means to buy and explore the sounds of Donut. Now I'm not going to put these guys on the top of the pedestal, but they did make a good album, The album Fuzz is well constructed. After purchasing Mule 12 years ago, I began collecting the rest of there albums. Fuzz continues the tradition of garage rock with a flare of essence. They appear to enjoy what they play and are proud of it. If you are familiar with this band and the vocals of Antona, then this album is sure worth having!

Do the Donut,

The last CD before their hiatus didn't do much for me since they had departed from their rock roots. Then they somehow had a low key comeback.Haven't heard 3 sisters. Fuzz finally returns to their rock roots. These guys can still churn out some great tunes. This is the donut I loved in the nineties even though they do sound a bit tired. But recommended for anyone who likes real music and those who liked Alice Donut in the past. Smile!

Longtime fan, always enjoyed their stuff and still do... never the same movie twice, which is a bonus. Anyways, to piss-off the die-hards, my top 3 are Fuzz, Untidy Suicides, and Mule. Sorry, but that's my final answer. Sorry... 3 sisters didn't call for the piece of tissue afterwards.

While not as bracing as their startlingly good comeback album "Three Sisters," the Donut stretches out a bit more on this offering, serving up a slew of solid songs that recall their adventuresome glory days. Unlike "Three Sisters," "Fuzz" drags at points, but not many -- and the trade-off is that there is greater instrumental interplay and some lovely harmonies. If you're a fan you're sure to want to keep supporting Alice Donut in their new, revitalized incarnation by purchasing this disc!Newbies might want to check "Three Sisters," "Untidy Suicides...," or even something from their back catalog like "Bucketfuls of Sickness and Horror in an Otherwise Meaningless Life" rather than this one -- but if you like what you hear you'll eventually want "Fuzz" too. |
