3.0 out of 5 stars Dostoyevsky is great; this set just so-so October 5, 2013

Fyodor Dostoyevsky (whose last name I prefer to spell with two y's) needs little comment other than to acknowledge that his works are universally recognized as great literature, and that I and millions of others enjoy reading them; this Waxkeep edition gathers numerous public domain versions of his works into one massive, memory-usurping bundle.

Two complaints: (1) As is common to virtually all Waxkeep editions, the TOC consists of one perfunctory, very lengthy, and cumbersome-to-use list of all book titles, all parts, and all chapters through which one must tediously click or scroll to find specific content. (2) And paragraphs are annoyingly separated by excessively wide spaces.

Since Dostoyevsky wrote in the Russian language, those of us unable to read him in that language must read him in translation. Some translations are better than others, and the skill of the translator has an effect on our enjoyment of any given title. For example, the English syntax of "The Idiot" is more natural and smoother reading when translated by Constance Garnett than by Eva M. Martin (both of whose translations are in the public domain); the translation of it used here is by Martin. The discriminating reader MAY wish to seek a specific translator or obtain newer or better translations than the old, public domain ones used in free and inexpensive ebook editions such as this (though newness does not, ipso facto, make them preferable, and, because they are still copyright-protected, they can be considerably more expensive). Overall, the older translations used here still hold up surprisingly well.

I obtained this set when it was offered for free, but I would NOT have purchased it at $1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic for a reason! June 7, 2014

The precursor to our dime a dozen crime novels only with profound meaning. You can almost smell the Russian air yet the story is relevant in any location.
