2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By James Yowell Yelvington VINE VOICE on July 25, 2011
Format: Audio CD
This compact disk (Summit DCD 181) featuring late Baroque music played by the American Brass Quintet (ABQ) was digitally recorded in 1994 at the Aspen Music Festival. If all the festival's music was of this caliber then the event must have been outstanding indeed!

The ABQ, which had made over 35 recordings from its first public performance in 1960 up to the time of this disk, has earned considerable praise over its long history. (Recently it celebrated its 50th anniversary by issuing the CD "State of the Art: The ABQ at 50.") Membership has, of course, changed over the years. For "Fyre & Lightning" the roster included trumpeters John Mase and Chris Gekker, hornist David Wakefield, trombonist Michael Powell, and bass trombonist John D. Rojak, with assistance by trombonist Mark Springer. The core instrumentation has remained stable over time: 2 trumpets, horn, trombone and bass trombone. (Noticeably absent is a tuba or baritone horn.)

Although there are many good brass groups on today's scene, the ABQ seems quite distinctive as to mission, repertoire, and style. It seeks to establish the brass quintet as a regular part of the chamber music world, partly by expanding its literature through additional transcriptions and new works. Stylistically it is characterized by the clarity, delicacy and nuance of its playing. Though it can emit strong, sizzling flourishes like other brass groups, it is equally capable of feather-light sound textures seldom heard elsewhere. It employs only modern instruments, but aims at historically informed interpretations. The Quintet has been resident at the Aspen Festival since 1970 and at the Juilliard School of Music since 1987.
