Product Description

As trails get faster and bikes get more capable, it only makes sense that protective gear needs to evolve at even rate. That's where the G-Form Elbow Pads enter the picture. When you put them on, they feel like summer-weight arm warmers. However, the rate-dependent pads stiffen under impact. So, you get the protection that you need, without having to resort to hockey pads in the process. G Form's pads start with a close-fitting sleeve to which its pads are attached. The upshot to this construction method is that the sleeves are breathable and highly flexible -- much more so than traditional pad constructions. But, it's the PORON XRDTM impact panels that really set these apart. Essentially, this is a rate-dependent material, which is a fancy way of saying that it stiffens under impact. Basically, when you're wearing them, it feels like a regular arm sleeve, because the articulated impact pads move so effortlessly with your arm. Additionally, the pad remains soft in that case, enhancing your freedom of movement. But, if you take a tumble onto the pad, the impact causes the pad to stiffen. This way, it effectively dissipates the majority of impact energy before it's absorbed by your body. These pads provide effective protection against scrapes and bruises, but for applications that require maximum protection, such as freeride or downhill, these aren't as protective as a true hard-shell pad. However, the blend of barely-there comfort and protection makes these pads ideal for trail riding. The G-Form Elbow Pads are available in five sizes from Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black and Yellow.

They are soft, breathable, meanwhile provide enough protection.

I do a lot of all mountain/XC mountain biking with some beginner/intermediate free ride stuff thrown in as well.

It bunches, not just at the bent of the elbow but at the upper arm and lower arm.

These work very well for what they are designed for, which is to help disperse the impact area in a fall, helping decrease the damage to the joint. These are not abrasion resistant like hard armor (DUH!). I've been wearing these mountain biking for a few months, and they work very well for trail riding. I would not use them for downhill racing, or other forms a riding/racing that really requires hard armor. These really shine in casual trail riding, where one would normally not wear any armor at all. They are light weight and very unobtrusive. I do suggest that if you are even close to being between sizes that you go with the smaller size, as these will stretch, but they'll never shrink.

If you're not a pro, still a beginner who's making mistakes while learning, I think you're better off with more substantial protection. I honestly think a long sleeve jersey would offer comparable protection in some cases, such as mtn biking, as these do not seem to be up to the task on the dirt. If you're playing out on the street at relatively low speeds (under 15 MPH), then this starts to make sense.

I've tried a few soft shelled elbow pads, hoping for something less bulky and easy to put on and take off. All of them slipped down my arm from regular movement. The G-Form is no exception, but I pressed on and wore it for a few months. I have premium arm warmers that stay put extremely well, and even cost less, but these seem poorly designed in comparison to those, as it just seems to be a low-end one, made of low stretch nylon, with a molded rubber-like pad sewn on.

The fit guide is a bit off. I fell clearly within the range of medium, following the guide, and bought based off the guide. In the store, you really can't try them on, since there's a plastic tag string going right through the center of it. I suggest also buying the next smaller size and returning the one that fits poorly.

The real test of this elbow pad came in form of an unexpected crash/fall from my mtn bike, over the front/side of the bike at low-moderate speed (~15 MPH), that I put my hands out for, and slid for a short bit before rolling once. As expected, it didn't even protect from abrasion. I noted that I instinctively adjusted my pads as I got up from the crash and discovered what was basically road rash on the under/inner side of my forearm, stopping about 1 inch from the point of the elbow.

Ordered G-form XL elbow pads twice from Amazon (fulfilled by G-Form). The first order I received "Brake hood Over-Grips" instead of the XL elbow pads. While the packaging clearly says the product was brake hood over grips, the sticky bar code on the package is mislabeled as "Elbow Pads - XL New". I thought it was a one-off problem until I returned the brake hood over grips and reordered the elbow pads only to receive the wrong product in exactly the same manner as before. I'm not going to try a third time. Three stars and I'll update the rating up or down when and if I ever get the elbow pads.

Update 10/30/11: G-Form contacted me (on their own!) and sent me the correct product. Very impressive customer service! I received the new black version which I much prefer over the original yellow. I've now had a chance to use them for a few mountain bike rides and in short - I love them! They fit and feel much like arm warmers and offer the kind of protection with minimal bulk that I'm looking for as a x-country/trail rider. Today I had a minor crash when my front tire got caught in a rut. I landed on my side and right elbow and the the elbow pad worked to perfection. I pretty much forgot I was wearing them and then when I did crash, they stayed in place and there was no blood, no bruising, no pain. Exactly the sort of performance I was hoping for. I think its a good compromise between protection and comfort for the type of riding I do. Very happy with the product to this point. I'll update later if durability becomes an issue.

I had a bad fall one day and scraped up both my arms pretty bad so I started looking for a low profile elbow pad that didn't distract me while mountain biking. Needless to say these were a perfect match. You barely notice you have them on as your biking (especially when going uphill) and they offer enough protection for your elbow and then some. These are great for beginner to intermediate riding. There are rubber supports on each end to prevent the pads from sliding up and down, so as long as you buy the right size you shouldn't have a problem. In my experience, I went a size up. I don't necessarily have big arms, but when I tried my recommended size (medium), it fit way too tight. I've only used them a few times (4-5) so I can't speak on durability, but so far so good. I also haven't fallen on them yet, but based on experiences from other people I know who used G-form products, they protect well.

Using these for bike polo. Flexibility with protection was my aim, and these do an okay job. I've still hurt my arm in the protected area and had to sew down the padding after a little flap ripped up, but overall I like them. I'm still not done with my search for the perfect protection.
