Didja Ever Here Music So Good,
By Ken Douglas (Landlocked in Reno) - See all my reviews
This review is from: G.I. Blues [Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
I still believe, after all these years, that this is one of the ten best records to come out in 1960 even though the superb Elvis is Back towers over it. This makes my list, because back then I wore out four or five copies of this disc. Seems I couldn't get enough of Elvis. My favorite song here is "Wooden Heart". RCA kind of screwed up by not releasing this as a single in the U.S. It was a hit in England, but before they got around to promoting it in the States, Joe Dowell covered it and had a number 1 hit with it. But I've always liked Elvis' version so much better.
It seems there is a new Elvis repackage every year, but I prefer going back to the originals, listening to the music in the order it was meant to be heard. There isn't a song on this record that I'd delete from my iTunes playlist. And even though today "G.I. Blues" might sound a bit corny, when I hear it, I'm back in high school and I still enjoy the heck out it. And if you're into Elvis ballads, the often overlooked "Pocket Full of Rainbows" is one of his best. "Didja' Ever" is my second favorite song here. It doesn't make those repackages, maybe it's because of the marching music, but I love the lyrics and I get a lot of them days, didja ever get one of them? And didja ever hear music so good? And, of course, there's a real rocker here, too. Listen to "Blue Suede Shoes," you'll know what I mean.

This re-issue of the G I BLUES soundtrack is the best ever. The sound quality is the best and RCA has gone to the limit on this one. On 26JAN10, RCA released seven other soundtracks along with this one and all have the same fantastic sound. Those titles were GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS; FUN IN ACAPULCO; VIVA LAS VEGAS; ROUSTABOUT; GIRL HAPPY; FRANKIE AND JOHNNY and CLAMBAKE. I would highly recommend all of them.

His best soundtrack from the 1960's,
By A Fan (VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: G. I. Blues (SHM-CD) (Audio CD)
This was one of Elvis' biggest hit albums, staying at number 1 on the US album chart for 8 weeks. It did this despite not producing a big hit single in the US (although "Wooden Heart" was a huge hit internationally, it never charted in the US). In my opinion, it is his best 1960's movie soundtrack (though not quite as good as some of his groundbreaking 1950's soundtracks). "Shopping Around" is an underapreciated rocker and I also really liked "Pocket Full of Rainbows" and "GI Blues". It is a shame that this CD has to be imported. A superior collection of early 60's pop and rock!
