5.0 out of 5 stars warning: this g.i. joe is not for kids; NOT to be confused with the silly action film, November 24, 2009

Most longtime G.I. Joe fans would probably agree that the recent film simply did not do justice to the G.I. Joe brand or storyline (or, for that matter, the intelligence of G.I. Joe fans). Fortunately, at roughly the same time as the film came out, fans were treated in quick succession to G.I. Joe Resolute (the anime-influenced animation special, well worth checking out), Larry Hama's Origins series, and now G.I. Joe: Cobra, which is NOT to be confused with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (a.k.a. G.I. Joe: The Downfall of an Entire Franchise at the Hands of a Hack Hollywood Director).
This is a dark, brooding, character-driven gem of a story about a Joe gone so deep undercover that his morality has not merely been compromised; it has been obliterated. And quite deliberately, it turns out. I won't say more so as not to ruin the surprise, but this is a lovely bit of writing. Costa and Gage are thus far the only people to pick up the reins of the G.I. Joe franchise who have been able to rival, and even surpass, the intelligence, depth, and complexity of the G.I. Joe universe that Larry Hama created.

Very highly recommended. A bit surprising that Hasbro allowed this, but also a very good sign. It's been so well received that IDW is doing a second mini-series that picks up where this one left off. More good news.

If you're not a G.I. Joe fan at all, this book stands on its own quite well as a nice bit of film noir in comic book form. You might find some of the character names rather odd, but other than that, you won't feel you're reading something based on a line of children's toys.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfection, January 4, 2011
This review is from: G.I. Joe: COBRA (Paperback)
For true, adult fans of G.I. Joe you could not ask for more. I was surprised and shocked at how well written this graphic novel was.

as a warning this is NOT for small children.

At first I was a little reluctant about purchasing this one because I saw the artwork which kinda turned me off. To top it off I also do not like all these different G.I.Joe series being released(e.g. G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero, G.I. Joe, G.I.Joe Origins, Minds and Heart's, Future Noir, etc....), because it just makes it too hard to follow. With that said though this book was worth every penny!!!!!!
The story is amazing and once I finished reading it, I wanted more. I can't wait to see more of this!

I grew up loving G.I. Joe as a child. I remember racing home from the school bus to catch every episode of the cartoon. I never got into the comics but when Devil's Due relaunched the book in the early 2000's I jumped aboard. Sadly, none of those stories hooked me. Now, under the watchful eyes of IDW, the G.I. Joe franchise is born anew. This story is a realistic and raw militaristic book. This story, involving the undercover Joe, Chuckles, is amazing. The plot is dynamite and the script seems on point. The art by Anthony Fuso is perfect match for the book. Overall, I really enjoyed this and look forward to checking out more of the new Joe books.
