The G.I. Joe comic series from Marvel Comics was one of the bestselling comics of the 80's (and at one point Marvel's bestselling title) with superb writing from Larry Hama who would often draw on his own military knowledge and expertise. The 12 issues within (1-12) have been collected before and reviewed before Classic G.I. Joe, Vol. 1 and 2 issues in Classic G.I. Joe Vol. 2 (v. 2) so I do not need to discuss those contents. What I will mention is that not only is this collection oversized it also collects something never before collection in a trade or hardcover. Hot Potato is here in a collection for the first time and now can be enjoyed again. The artwork has been touched up a bit since the first IDW collections and some errors they made in the printings are now corrected. Also collected are all the pinups from the issues, some of which have not been collected before. Also included are essays on the series and Hama's writing and really goes into detail to show the depth of the writing and how changes and edits were made. Much information has been provided in this 312 page collection to ensure that it is easily accessible to any and all. It doesn't matter if you are a longtime fan or a new reader, this book will be a great treat for you!

I've been reading comic books for 35 years and have been a GI Joe fan since 1982. This collection is everything an "old school" GI Joe comics fan could want. Collecting the first 12 issues, along with several pages of previously unpublished background material, the content is nearly outshined by the presentation. By 'presentation,' I mean this book is HIGH quality, exceeding, I think, the DC Archives and Marvel Masterworks-type books. The printing and color are crisp and super clean.

If you are on the fence about buying this, don't be. You will be thrilled with your purchase. This is the definitive treatment to a classic!

Yo Joe!

----------Spoilers Ahead----------

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, The Comic Series, debuted in the Summer of 1982 with its first issue, Operation Lady Doomsday, selling out in less than 48 hours.

This was only a sign of things to come.

Written by Asian-American, Vietnam War Vet, Larry Hama, Joe quickly rose to the top of the best-selling comic books charts. It would be Marvel Comics' second best selling title of the 1980s, and at times would even surpass The X-Men and The Amazing Spiderman to take over the "#1" spot.

Please do not be misled by its title (or silly television show): this was decidedly not a "kiddie comic book." And, it is considered the "official canon," if you will, of the Joe universe.

Larry Hama, in the early 80s, wanted to do a "war comic" and pitched a revamped SHIELD (Yes, that SHIELD currently seen in The Avengers--and on ABC this Fall) storyline to Marvel's editors.

He was promptly turned down.

However, not too long afterwards, Hasbro decided to relaunch its popular 1970s G.I. Joe toyline (3 and 3/4 inches this time around), and Hama quickly re-packaged his SHIELD storyline into a Joe storyline and this time Marvel's editors granted him the go-ahead.

* Special recognition and consideration should also be given to Marvel Comics executive, James Galton, and Marvel's legendary Editor-In-Chief, Jim Shooter, for their part in Marvel's acquiring the Joe brand.

Hama has stated several times he (also) got the writer's duties because no one else at Marvel wanted it. You see, toy comics only lasted--on average--for three years, and most of Marvel's senior writers didn't want to bother with it.

Hama's Joe would run for 12 years...

I got my copy today of G.I. Joe the Complete Collection Volume 1. WOW!! :) This book is great and I haven't been this excited about a series in a LONG time. I wish we had the whole series RIGHT now. I'll try to be brief and go over a few highlights. First off, the cover. Nice layout and design. Most of the cover is kind of a semi gloss but the banner is a nice smooth matte finish and the G.I. Joe logo is embossed. Nice. As indicated in Mark Bellomo's interview, it appears the extras will begin in the next volume. There's a great intro by Mark in this volume. Hot Potato is nice to finally have collected. An unexpected and the coolest surprise for me while scanning through this is what I saw on the bottom of page 1 of issue 1; a footnote referring that the island mentioned is not the same Cobra island from #41. Wonderful idea Mark. I'm hoping we'll see lots more of these notes. I know there have been countless times a plot point or revelation happened in an issue and I would always wonder what issue was that when something else happened. Now with these notes I can easily be reminded and pull out another volume to refresh my memory, in the past and future. I've just barely scanned through this volume but I wanted to share my initial impression and post some photos. IDW knew what they were doing when they trusted Mark Bellomo with this project. It is in great hands. Now bring on Volume 2.
