This was on the shelf at the library so I checked it out. It seems much more bizarre to me than it did in the 1980s. I can see America was just coming off the over-the-top anti-violence kick of the late 60s/1970s present in "childrens" programming. Yet the writers were adults, and still had to make the show exciting enough to sell toys and cereal. So, there are a lot of convoluted acrobatics and props used in the action sequences to minimize the amount of direct violence shown. The motives of Cobra remain awkward and unfathomable: maybe they wouldn't need to "take over the world" if they stopped blowing billions of dollars on secret bases and massive high tech weapons.

In Season 1.1 we had 3 big, multi-part stories, and a few single episodes. Here in Season 1.2 it's mainly single, self-contained episodes, and an info-giving featurette.

Season 1.2 continues the excellence of the series. We do actually get a couple of 2-part stories here, and we see more detail & characterization being added. Cover Girl appears quite a bit, which is nice, since I mainly remember Scarlet & Lady Jaye. She's also the only one of the 3 who doesn't entirely shoot down Shipwreck's advances. :) G.I. Joe has great characters & action.

A few highlights...

- Twenty Questions: A TV investigator slams G.I. Joe as being a rip-off of government resources. Shipwreck takes him on a wild ride to show him the reality of life in true action.

- The Synthoid Conspiracy, 2-parts: Cobra infiltrates G.I. Joe with synthetic imitations of real people. The Joes tackle the conspiracy with the help of a surprising ally.

- Lights! Cameras! Cobra!: A filmmaker recruits real Joes for his G.I. Joe movie, and Cobra appears and makes it highly realistic.

- Battle For The Train Of Gold: Cobra robs Fort Knox of its precious gold right under the noses of the Joes. They then try to flee in a serpentine bullet train, with the Joes in hot pursuit!

- Cobra Sound Waves: Destro has an ultrasonic weapon in the Middle East, and Cobra Commander enlists his help to try to destroy a 3rd of the world's oil supply.

- The Viper Is Coming: In the conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra, a new 3rd party emerges! Who exactly is the Viper? Has to be seen to be believed!

- Captives Of Cobra, 2-parts: The Joes and Cobra face off over the power of explosive, growing energy crystals. Cobra captures & brainwashes Joe family members in the conflict.

... And really, I like this entire collection. Season 1.1 and Season 1.2 really go great together!

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero Season 1.2 continues the exciting series with some great fan favorites. Among them are the tension packed "The Viper Is Coming" where a mysterious caller baffles the Joe team with Cobra secrets, vague threats and promises to reveal himself as the Joes prepare for the worst, "The Gamesmaster" where a billionaire psychotic engineer kidnaps Flint, Lady Jaye, The Baroness and Cobra Commander with the intention of killing them off for his own amusement and forcing them to work together and the surprisingly heartfelt "The Phantom Brigade" where Cobra uses cursed artifacts to resurrect three spectral warriors who proceed to lay waste to the Joe team at the behest of Cobra. The excellent two parter:"The Synthoid Conspiracy" which contains some great charecterization and rivalry among the Cobra brass as they plant bioengineered replicas of Duke and some Pentagon officials with the intention of bringing down the Joe team internally is an underrated classic,"The Germ" has some great sci-fi flair when an experiment at a secret Cobra base goes awry causing the Joe team to swing into action against a seemingly unstoppable blob and the well-polished "The Spell Of The Siren" a Baroness based episode, where the lady of Cobra uses an ancient conch shell with hypnotizng powers over males allowing the females of G.I Joe center stage. There are a couple missteps, "The Greenhouse Effect" is a hilariously bad episode about Cobra using giant vegetables to conquer the Joes that is saved by some funny dialogue and sight gags and "Haul Down The Heavens" despite its interesting locale goes nowhere as Cobra's plan to pull down the Aurora Borealis and melt the polar ice caps is just too much. With other good episodes like "Battle For The Train of Gold", "Twenty Questions", "Lights, Camera, Cobra!" and the two parter "Captives of Cobra" Season 1.2 is a great purchase for fans of G.I. Joe.

I should start off with a warning, sometimes the way we remember things are better than they actually are. That can be said for GI Joe. The stories are campy, the artwork decent but nothing special and the dialog runs the gamut of witty and pathetic. All that said I am a GI Joe fan and I am glad to see these released on DVD. The nostalgia for me is better than the memory of waking up early to watch them before school. Don't expect art, expect a cartoon made for 10 year olds, but with a message of patriotism and doing good. I love GI Joe for what they are and I was thrilled with the DVDs. The quality is good and the packaging is high quality. The season also contains some very complex story lines if you read into them, I notice stuff now that I never did as a ten year old sitting on a couch. If you are a real fan you have already ordered these. If you are sitting on the fence its worth it to indulge. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
