4.0 out of 5 stars 80s Nostalgia at its Best, July 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you're reading this, you probably grew up watching G.I. Joe: The Movie and already know you like it, so I won't spend a lot of time reviewing the movie itself. Suffice it to say that as a piece of nostalgia, G.I. Joe: The Movie is great fun, but for newcomers, I think it might be hard to sit through. Personally, I love it.

IMAGE QUALITY:
What you really want to know is whether this is any better than the Rhino release from a few years ago. I always thought the Joe movie looked pretty good, but this new Blu-ray is a significant improvement. The visual aspects of the film still have some minor issues (scratches, dust and some slight color shifts that could be the product of bad prints or bad restoration), but it still looks better than ever. Colors are vibrant and detail is generally quite sharp. I noticed several visual details on characters or in the background I'd never caught before.

WIDESCREEN:
It is also worth noting that this is the first time the film has been released in widescreen. It was intended to be released theatrically, but after the 1986 Transformers: The Movie flopped, Hasbro and Sunbow opted for the direct to video route. As a result, G.I. Joe: The Movie has always been presented in the standard 4:3 TV format. For the first time with this release we can see the movie as it would have been shown in theaters. This means that a little of the top and bottom of the TV version have been shaved off and a little has been restored to the sides. There are some sequences when the new format works in its favor, and others where the 4:3 format works better, but on the whole, I enjoy the new format, especially when viewing the movie on a widescreen TV.

BONUS FEATURES:
The bonus features are fairly minimal, but the commentary is surprisingly fun to listen to. Story Consultant Buzz Dixon talks about the process of writing the movie, and how things changed along the way, mostly due to input from Hasbro. He's really funny in an understated way and I found his discussion informative and interesting. The other bonus features are worth about one watch. The art is presented in a terrible slide show video format, and the PSAs are fun but represent only a few of the many that were made for the Joe cartoon. The DVD of this release is also included with the Blu-ray, which I always appreciate.

This release is certainly the best to date. If you like G.I. Joe: The Movie, you'll want to add this to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-Laaa?, August 10, 2010
By TastyBabySyndrome "T(to the)B(to the)S" ("Daddy Dagon's Daycare" - Proud Sponsor of the Little Tendril Baseball Team, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: The Movie (DVD)
Cobra-La versus G.i.Joe - this is first time anything like this went down in the cartoons. We saw Cobra commander and we saw the people that served under him, even noting the rise of Serpentor (thanks, Dr. MindBender, for throwing a Wrestler's DNA in with Alexander the Great, Hapoleon, Gengis Khan, and others) and the creation of things like the B.A.T.S. (Battle Android Troopers). This time, however, Cobra has a weapon that can really harm the world and he breaks out his true motives - the rise of Cobra- La.

S0, what is Cobra-La? Well, I'm glad you asked. They are a race that has been dwelling underground, biding their time while C.C. put plans into motion. The only problem was that their leader was not happy about what was going on and, well, he kicked it all up a notch. He brought some oddities with him, too, ranging from his Nemisis Destroyer to his own brand of guard.

The use of C-La was something nobody expected back then and, aside from older viewers, kids like myself were dazzled by it. I remember the horror that lurked under ground and seeing what they looked like, knowing all-the-while that the Joes would be fighting on with only public backing.
what a sad fighting experience for those poor Joes - if you really think on it.

Things don't go as you think they would, either. C-C; just watch the show to see what hapens to him. Heck, just watch it to see exactly what I am trying horrible hard not to spoiler - the grand opening of the first Fungi mall under the snow and ice! Yes! Or something like that.
O, and the creepy things that go along with it (Nemesis, did you wash your hands before serving the human's pizza? You did? how awful!!!)

The extras on the disc are listed but you should note that this is the firs time we get widescreen. Me, I love that feel. If you don't, however, you can always switch to something else.

Well, well, welll worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gi Joe original movie defines 'entertainment!', April 22, 2010
In the wake of the original Transformers animated movie, comes this, the GI Joe animated movie. Action, characters, pacing, and performance are all top notch, and
the production is world class as well.

"Big" movies like this are no longer done. They are usually truncated financially and creatively to limit the budget, and to save money. GI Joe is
one of the last movies done in this 'stellar' fashion. I cannot recommend it enough!

I'm happy about the Blu Ray/DVD combo, as more people are moving toward Blu ray and don't want to NOT have a regular dvd as well. (not everyone has Blu ray)

As a fan of world class movies, I can honestly and wholeheartedly recommend Gi Joe the MOVIE to you. Better this than the 'not so great' live action one that came out recently.

This movie gets 5 stars, thumbs up, and a top notch world class recommendation.

Superb!
