This review is from: G.I. Joe: Storm Shadow Volume 1: Solo (G. I. Joe (Graphic Novels)) (v. 1) (Paperback)
I have been reading and collecting comics for 30 years. I read everything that's good. Let me tell you this one is great. Awesome art, intelligent, coherent story with incredible rhythm. Highly recommended for all fans of ninjas. Storm Shadow is one of the great characters. I'd love to see more and, I know I'm not the only one. This one was so impressive I bought a second copy to give to a friend. Enjoy!

Storm Shadow: graphic novel. Definitely one to purchase if your into collecting graphic novels and love reading G.I. Joe. This novel gives the reader a background of information about Storm Shadow: the man and his art of Ninjitsu.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Hama and beyond, October 28, 2010

It pains me that I missed this run by the "father" of G.I. Joe one Larry Hama because this was one great( sadly short lived ) series.

During the G.I. Joe run when DDP had the rights they let Larry have free reign on Tommy arishikage aka Storm Shadow who at this point was no longer part of the Joe team over in this book G.I. Joe: America's Elite: America's Newest War, Vol. I. Now I'm a huge fan of both Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes but what Larry did to expand on the Arishikage Clan, such as introducing Tommy's Aunt who not only is a ninja bad ass in her own right but helps add to the smart and funny vibe this series had going. Not to go to far into the unknown a popular Cobra villian or two pops up to give old school fans something to sink their teeth into, but I must say one of the best new faces is the addition of a female character called Pale Poney who's a half russian half japanese spetsnaz/yakuza. She also wouldn't be a Hama female if she didn't have a soft side to her harden warrior extior.

As a bonus besides a four issue arc you get issue #5 which is a stand alone issue and I want to say it's Larry's stab at a noir ninja story, my only gripe with it is that the art for it while ok didn't really fit the story where for the first arc Mark Robinson's pencils went hand in hand with the frantic pace of that story.

The reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is mainly due to the fact that only two more issues where released before Hasbro pulled the plug on DDP having the rights to G.I. Joe( Storm Shadow was then pulled back into the main Joe book for the World War III storyline ), which means that yes the final two issues are not part of this tpb. Now those two issues are only tied into each other and excluding Tommy's aunt has nothing to do with the previous five issues but it would have been nice to have all seven issues in one book as now this tpb is out of print and the DDP webstore no longer sells all seven issues plus one varient, here's to hoping that somewhere down the line now that IDW is putting the DDP books in tpb form they'll put this whole series as well as other DDP Joe gems out to.
