Can't Touch the Original G.I.Joe Cartoons,
By Mike (Toronto, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: G.I. Joe - Valor Vs. Venom (DVD)
As a big G.I.Joe fan, I couldn't wait to see this new cartoon. However, the computer animation is not that good (Destro's face look like more moulded jello then a steel mask) and the storyline is out of this world (very unrealistic). In fact, it appears that Hasbro has taken GI Joe back into the unrealistic world that killed the original GI Joe back in the mid-80's: meaning introducing crazy storylines mixed with out of this world characters. If you are a huge fan of the old 80's Sunbow series and are a big believer (like me) that the GI Joe movie killed the original 80's series, then you will find this new computer animated movie to be a waste of money (like I did). If you are new to GI Joe, I would recommend you pass on this movie and get the two original mini-series available on DVD as those two original mini-series are true to what made GI Joe so popular back in the 80's.

This failed attempt to resurrect the classic G.I. Joe series comes across with animation, story, and dialogue that belong in cheap game cut scenes. It had the potential of genetically modified Cobra troops and old-school characters reborn, but falls miserably short of the (admittedly already cheesy) quality of the original cartoon. Now, I am rather easy to please, and really enjoyed the old cartoon, but this film is mostly a string of mediocre action, weak character development (or involvement for those who already know them), and terrible puns at every turn. All told, the target audience should be more the 10 and younger crowd who have likely had no experience with real G.I. Joe. Current fans from around 20 or older will be sorely disappointed and should avoid the expenditure and wasted 80 minutes.

My boys like it, and unlike so many other movies out there, it is clean.
There is action, but not gory violence. As one of ny sons put it, "There's no blood and no real bullets -- everybody just shoots a bunch of lasers and then they karate fight." (That's fine, he likes karate fights.) Also, a lot of robots get blown up.

Not that bad,
This review is from: G.I. Joe - Valor Vs. Venom (DVD)
I bought this for my son who is five, he loves the movie and watches it daily while playing with his G.I. Joe figures. If your expecting to see something that resembles the original cartoon series then you will be disapointed, but overall it really isn't that bad. It has a positive message for kids, eventhough it does show some mild violence later on in the movie. For an adult it's really boring but it keeps my child interested and that's pretty difficult to do with a young child!

I missed the original series,

This is an all new G.I. Joe adventure for an all new generation, so I shouldn't except the same things. With that said, I still somewhat enjoyed this, but the use of CG instead of hand drawn animation is what really made me mad. It's not the worst CG I've seen, it was actually pretty good for a direct to DVD release, but it just seem too different from the old cartoon and comics to have it feel like the same series. Despite these problems, at a mere 77 minutes, I was able to sit and enjoy it as a free rental as the story itself was still classic Joe. If you want to rent G.I. Joe rent the original series, if you want something new get this one.

Its not as good as the original GI Joe series,
This review is from: G.I. Joe - Valor Vs. Venom (DVD)
This version of Gi joe isnt as good as the original series by Sunbow, but it does have its good points. The battle scenes with Snake eyes and Storm Shadow are really spectacular and the storyline isnt too bad. I do prefer the old style cartoons rather than CGI. But all in all its well worth the purchase and to have in your GI joe collection

I am a big fan of the G.I. JOE series and I grew up in the 80's and I had G.I. JOE action figures and this film just brought those childhood memories back and it has an awesome storyline and an excellent amount of actors playing the voiceovers of the familar characters. It's a film fun for any age that wants to let the kid out some week night or saturday morning.

this is a pretty good CG animated G.I. Joe adventure.it's funny and
action packed, with some great fight scenes.the voices fit the characters very well.i liked the characters, both the villains and the heroes.if you are used to seeing G.I.Joe in regular animation, the CG may take some getting used to.for me,since i hadn't seen a lot of G.I.Joe before, the CG didn't bother me at all.in some movies,CG doesn't quite look right for some characters.but it works here.i didn't think the story was all that special though.still, the movie was fairly fun and fast paced.even if you're not a fan of G.I. Joe,you might still like this movie.for me,GI. Joe:Valor vs.Venom is a 3.5/5

Same as Spy Troops- Not Perfect, But Still Fun,
By Sammie L. "The East Coast Filly" (Ballston Spa, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: G.I. Joe - Valor Vs. Venom (DVD)
Valor vs. Venom follows the same format as Spy Troops, but with more characters and better animation. It seems their computer people got some practice in after Spy Troops. Much improvement on the computer animation. Watch the fights between the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and the movements look more fluid than in the previous movie.
The same problems with story and characters, however, carried over into this next movie. The story, though it does the job, isn't really well developed and the character development is just as shakey. In fact, some of them aren't really developed at all. Which is a shame, considering they had a pretty nice cast of characters assembled, from old stand-bys (like Duke, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes) to relatively new additions (Kamakura and Dr. Link Talbot). It looks like they got so carried away adding characters they didn't leave themselves room to really go into each one. The key, like the previous movie, is to just sit back and enjoy. If you're a die-hard GI Joe fan and want everything to be exactly perfect, you're setting yourself up for heartbreak. If you just want to see your favorite character with a modern-day facelift and some nice animation, you'll like it. Plus, even with the plot problems, the movie still has enough action and entertainment to keep things interesting. Plus, the extra features are fun to look at, including a cool music video (an even better one than Spy Troops), character profiles, and a behind-the-scenes look. Also, it apparently has a game, though I haven't really delved into it yet. Overall, it has it's kinks, but still a decent movie if your willing to just relax and enjoy it. |
