5.0 out of 5 stars Saxophone Collossus
This entire live disc is great but the highlights are the sheer virtuosity and fun of G-Man and just try not to move/dance/react to Don't Stop the Carnival (a career hightlight) which marries the jazz tradition to a caribbean traditional classic. This album is definately jazz but -as it happens- it renewed my faith in rock and roll. Thank you Sonny!

2.0 out of 5 stars Half a song???
My favorite Rollins song "Don't Stop the Carnival" has been edited! Why do they fade-in during the MIDDLE of the tune and deprive us of the blistering intro shown in the movie??? A HUGE disappointment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album of the 1980's, February 12, 2009
This review is from: G-Man (Audio CD)
This was, I believe, Robert Christgau's favorite album of 1987 and his fourth favorite of the 1980's, thus I had to hear it. I'm too ignorant to know how to rate this in terms of Rollins' oeuvre, but it is a pleasure to listen to. Straightahead, virtuosic jazz with an incredible amount of energy!

the Carnival. This track, the third one, demonstrates CLEARLY why Sonny Rollins continues to deserve the title of greatest living tenor. Yes, Brotzman, yes yes etc. But, Mr Rollins is THE connection to it all, to the generationS of greats, & still goin' . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Mmmmmmmmm Bop!, March 20, 2000

This must have been the album those beautiful Hanson boys were listening to when they came up with the title mmm bop. 'Cause people, this album is mmm, it bops and it drops... a bomb on me everytime I hear it. Ever since it came out in that wonderful year 1987 (you should know that I'm sooo 80's!), I've been calling myself The G-Man when dialing 06 (also the title of a great Theo van Gogh movie, check it out!), Girl 6 (also the title of a great NPG album, check it out!) and my best friend Jennifer Lopez on the 6 (also the title of her great album, check it out!). But back to Sonny, he is truly a musical genius. Ever since I first picked up this album, I've turned myself into a great-looking jazz dude. You know, slick brown suit, black-and-white shoes, a beige stetson hat and a menthol cigarette between my lips, I'm cool! You know, I find a use for every song title on this album in my daily life. I mean, G-Man, I've told you, that's me. Kim is the name of my would-be girlfriend, you know Basinger. Don't stop the carnival is what I tell the DJ when I'm dancing myself into a frenzy in the local discotheque, every night baby! And tenor madness is what I call my ding-a-ling, you know what I mean, or else ask Chuck Berry, he wrote a no. 1 hit about it way back in the early 70's (I'm also very 70's, didn't you know?). I mean, talkin' 'bout real-life madmen, me and Chuck B. will settle da score! And then I haven't even mentioned the music itself... ooooh baby. Pure honey for the heart, the soul and the cross... a utopian experience! (also the title of a great PM Dawn album, check it out!) But seriously (also the title of a really bad Phil Collins album, oh I do hate that baldheaded maniac!), this album makes my top-3 of best albums ever made, in any music category! Get it dude!
