I previously owned a G-Tech Q Drive and found it to be extremely well built. This unit is no different, although a bit noisier. I was going to rate it 4 stars because of the fan noise until I realized that this type of technology required a fan and all fans will make some noise. I normally leave it off, and run it once or twice a week with my Macs. They recognize the unit when powered up and immediately launch Time Machine. I keep a 3rd hard drive off-site which gives me peace of mind.

67% failure rate!,

I have had this back-up drive for about 6 months. IN that time I have attempted only 3 backups. It has failed 2 times. The first time, one of the hard drives failed right out of the box. They replaced it. The second time, it worked just fine. The third time device says that whatever drive is in the top bay has failed. I have switched drives and it can read both drives, but if one is in the top, it says that one has failed.I have had other problems with their G-Drive Q drive. I am a professional photographer, and I take back-up very seriously. I also take very good care of my digital equipment for it is my livelihood. I would definitely not trust this product with any data that you care about. Look elsewhere for a quality backup solution. This is not it, I am most sad to say.

Great hard drive,

Love it. It's quiet, seems fairly fast and it's redundant, which is always good in a hard drive. My only complaint is that it isn't a higher capacity for the price... a 1.5TB is available but that pushes the price up even higher to around $800.

I have had this item for probably 6 months or more and couldn't be more impressed. Attached to my network, I can keep all our Macs backed up and happy. It is fast, quiet, and basically "out of sight, out of mind."Plus, it is a great place to store all those media files (music, photos, videos) that everyone in the family can access. (That way you do not need to keep all the historical media files on any single computer.) With a (hot swappable) removable 3rd drive stashed in the garage/barn/friend's place, you can have affordable offsite backup as well :-) Amazing value and performance.

I've had this device on my desk for about 6 months and been completely satisfied. Lost a drive about a week ago, so I got to test RAID-1 features. I was able to rebuild the lost drive with no difficulty at all. Made a menu selection, walked away, came back at the end of the day, and everything was fine. Highly recommended.
