This device comes so close to being very cool, but the result is a gizmo without a real purpose.

Here's the need: I have videos, pictures, and/or music that I want to view & hear when I'm away from home, but my iPad & iPhone have limited space. I want to take this stuff on the road with me so I can view whenever and wherever I want.

According to the product description, this is the device to solve that need, because it's designed with "mobile" and "on-the-go" in mind.

However, there's no battery, so you have to plug it in somewhere. Ouch. To me, that really kills most of the primary use cases (playing movies for the kids in the car, or watching something in the airport or on a plane). The only other use scenarios that I can that I can picture are maybe a kiosk or trade show booth.

So let's overlook this *minor* detail for now. What does this device do?

Using either a USB cable or the wired or wireless Ethernet connections you can copy your media to this device. Then using their free iOS app you can wirelessly connect to the device (up to 5 connections) and watch the movies on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. That's pretty cool. This would be cool in a hotel room on the road, but once you get to your room it would be just as easy to watch movies on your laptop. The playback is good, with very little jittering or buffering.

You'll need to be fairly technically savvy to put this to use. Before you can watch a movie on your iPad, you'll need to do the following:

* Set up the device
* Install the iOS app
* Rip your movie(s)
* Copy the movies to the device
* Connect to the device
* Play

I just got my device and simply; it's a great companion to my iPad, Samsung Galaxy 10.1, XBOX, and Boxee.

Setup: Simple and elegant. After I setup my SSID, password and admin password, the setup wizard steps me through connecting to the new network and I was up and running.

I loaded a few movies into the Public folder and I was able to watch the movie on my iPad, Galaxy, XBOX and Boxee.

Integrated Web App: I like the fact that with one click I can see all the movies on my HD no matter which folder it's located on. The same can be said about documents music and photos. I think there's room to improve for music playback on the web app but I don't plan on using it to consume my music. I moved my music folder into the Public folder and voila, iTunes is able to see the unit and all the songs. (like)

iPad app: Browsing photos is pretty fast. I loaded a few movies on the unit and was able to stream them effortlessly.

Loading content: I found out after playing with it for a bit that there are so many ways to upload content. USB (fastest), AFP or SMB (fast), using the integrated web app (moderately fast).

Pros: Ease of use, DLNA support, AFP/SMB support, iTunes server, fast wifi hotspot.

Cons: not black, not metal, no battery, no wireless client mode, no android app. I know wah!

When comparing the G|Connect to Seagate's wireless IOs storage device, the Satellite, one feature stands out-- the seagate device has an internal battery pack and therefore can actually operate anywhere. If this capability is important to you there really isn't any comparison to be made-the G|Connect lacks this feature and G-Technology recommends (on the support site) against using any sort battery pack with G|Connect. One would be wise to take this advice. The G|Connect doesn't appear to deal with a sudden loss of power very well, something that can happen with a battery pack. The satellite will at least attempt to shut itself down. When I accidentally unplugged my G|Connect, the dc power plug is a very small 1.3mm with little spring friction holding it in, the drive scrambled itself. It took a call to g-technology support, which is excellent BTW, to reset and re-image the firmware.

Let's assume you don't require a battery powered solution, and you ignore what's printed right on the package--- "Wireless storage for iPad- freedom to take more with you wherever you go."

How well does the G|Connect achieve its goals? UNEVENLY

1. Connectivity-- the hotspot feature functions perfectly. every hotel I've recently stayed in charges for internet access per device. The hotspot allows you setup wifi in hotels, visiting offices, etc. When you connect to your local network through ethernet, and don't need the wifi, you can disable the wireless radio which allows the ethernet port to function at Gigabit speeds. One large shortcoming is wireless passthrough.

This wireless storage device is pricey considering it cannot operate on a battery pack, so I am not sure of its value. If you need some extra storage for your iPad at home or at the office, then it will work for you, as it must be plugged in to a standard DC outlet (and this is recommended by the manufacturer, as your data may become corrupted if you run it on a battery!). To me, this makes the "wireless" feature misleading. It is only partially wireless, as it still needs to be plugged into an outlet. As a storage device, it works fine, but you might want to shop around for competitive products and compare features before buying. Three stars because because they left off the one capability that makes so much sense with an iPad--the ability to take it with you, wherever you go.
