The enclosure provides Thunderbolt connectivity.

It's really well designed: I don't even have to have the disk on to use the external Display at the end of the thunderbolt chain.

Use it primarily for video files and editing and can edit directly from the drive which is exactly what I was looking for.

G-Tech really worked out the needed functions and ease of use for storage. I purchased this G-Dock on Amazon from Quantum-Wireless. Their price was great, they shipped next day at no cost and it arrived double boxed for safety. I will use them again.

Now for the G-Dock! I love the ease of use and compatibility with everything I do, in the office or in the field. I also purchased 6 extra G-Tech 1TB Drives to go with this Dock. Why so many G-Drives? Well, because I have several levels of storage, number one being at use in the office or field, level 2 for saved images in dedicated folders (as-is untouched as shot images, and level three are my photo albums of completed work and files. I store level two and three in a fire proof safe and only have them out to update and download new or revised work and then back into the safe. In addition, I also have the G-Tech G-Speed 8TB 4 Bay Q Storage system for my iMac and Mac Book Pro complete daily backup and it is setup as a Raid 5 system. I have 2 backup drives for this system and hopefully will not ever loose data again as was the case in the past. I am completely sold on the G-Tech equipment, "Well Built and thought out. Before purchasing this equipment I spent much time in research, spoke with the G-Tech sales and Tech folks. They were/are helpful, informative and have a great customer service & Tech team. Amazing, I was able to reach out and talk to REAL People on the phone, all having great attitudes by the way. That is why I have spent a bundle with this product line. Last comments, Both the G-Dock and G-Tech Q are Outstanding in my book. Love their systems!!

G-Technologies delivers on the promise of Thunderbolt speed with a beautifully engineered product.
The enclosure provides Thunderbolt connectivity. Individual drives can be RAID or JBOD. The bunch of drives option allows you to swap drives in and out as needed. These drives can directly connect to your laptop via USB 3, providing portability. There are other small portable Thunderbolt drives but they do not give actual Thunderbolt speeds.

I've had this drive for two weeks now, working with it heavily as I transfer files off of a 2009 Mac Pro. The most important advantage to me is that this drive is bootable with my MacBook Pro (Early 2011, 16GB, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7). That is, using Carbon Copy Cloner I can produce a disk which can then be then be booted from using the thunderbolt cable that comes with this drive. The only time I had problems was when I attempted to boot from an older system (I think it was 10.6), but then I did some software upgrades (one of which was a thunderbolt upgrade) as well as updating that older system to 10.8 and then all went well. I do notice that its a little sluggish when running from the external drive, however. The drives that go into the slots are very well-built, and operate without an extra power supply (just the usb), and whisper quiet. I purchased an additional 1TB drive from Amazon, last week for one hundred fifty, probably decreased amount because G-Technology has just release a 500GB SSD drive for this system. This is a great sign because it means G-Technology will continue supporting this expandable system for the future. Once the price of those SSD drives decreases (the 500GB SSD is a ridiculous five hundred right now) I will be getting those too. Right now I'm using it in JBOD mode, but if I choose, I can put this in 2 different RAID configurations (for safety or extreme speed), if I want to in the future. The fact that this has 2 Thunderbolt ports in the back is a huge advantage as it allows other disks or Displays to daisy chain off that one thunderbolt port on my MacBook Pro. It's really well designed: I don't even have to have the disk on to use the external Display at the end of the thunderbolt chain.Read more ›

Excellent. Use it as two separate external hard drives in music studio with new Mac Pro (one for samples and other for audio) Very fast. Works just like internal 7200rpm HD. Solid metal casing. Highly recommended!
