For Most consumers purchasing external hard drives, it's easy to look at G-Drive prices and ignore them. These raid configured drives are designed for one thing, speed and that's what they provide.
I've used many drives in the past and am currently using a 4tb non Thunderbolt model as well. Data Transfer rates on the Thunderbolt model are Amazing, i'm using it with a new Retina Macbook Pro and it's keeping up with Final Cut Pro X extremely well at 1080p nay any hiccups. If you watch any of the videos online showing the demo equipment, you'll see the Thunderbolt logo lights up, on the retail models it does not light up and that's a good thing. Additionally you'll not that the unit is a bit larger than other G-Drive hard drives, but this won't impact your usage at all.

Pros:
*Extremely fast, faster than my existing solutions. This is including a G-drive connected via Esata (The Mac Pro doesn't have the latest chipsets for faster throughput).
*Aesthetically pleasing; It's a nice piece of equipment that doesn't stand out, nor look cheap in buid quality.
*Rugged design; This thing is Solid and the cooling works quite well

Cons:
*Price $$$$$$; man is this thing expensive (still cheaper than my Pegasus setup though). As with all Thunderbolt hardware, there is a a heck of a lot more electronically needed over simple usb and Fw and that drives the price.
*Thunderbolt only; This isn't an issue for me, but if you're moving it around there's always a chance there won't be an appropriate port for it on your computer

It's likely we'll see prices drop here in the future, many motherboard manufacturers have announced Thunderbolt compatible equipment. Hitachi G-Drives are completely about performance and they always have and G-drive is no exception. If you're relying on read/write speeds, stick with the right equipment as it will save you time in the long run.

Purchased this drive from Apple Store. Within 30 days or so I figured out this drive was not cooling correctly. The temp on the drive was 59 degrees Celsius when not in use. The normal temp is lower than 45 degrees. Apple store only gives 15 days to return drives. So I called Gtech.....they wanted to give me an RMA where they replace this drive with a "re-furbished" drive. For all of you who are not up to speed on the lingo...that means a used case with used drives that they remanufactured. So I paid $600 bucks and that gets me a used drive after only 25 days or so. Thanks! Way to stand by your product!

I actually have the 6 TB version of this drive but other than that it's the same exact drive. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star review is that the drive is SO darn expensive for what it is. I am using it with my new iMac 27" computer and it works fine---very fast as advertised thru the Thunderbolt connection. Although some reviewers state that it can't be used as Raid 1 (backup mode), it can through the Apple Disc Utility on the computer...keep in mind though that if something were to happen to one of the drives, you would either have to open up the unit yourself but most likely send it back to G Tech for them to open.

We've respected G-Technology's reputation to produce high-performance Thunderbolt drives. We like that we can stack them vertically and daisy-chain up to 6 of these per Thunderbolt chain. They look great and normally perform very well. However, we've recently had a drive's READ component fail and the drive's performance has significantly deteriorated. G-Tech's support team were very amiable and arranged for a hot-swap.

Sadly, the refurbished 8-TB drive is not like the brand new units—their internal components rattle. We contacted G-Tech again and they sent another drive. It arrived with the same problem except this time, only one of the Thunderbolt ports was usable.

We contacted them again and made a reasonable request that they confirm their outgoing drives' internal components don't rattle and that their Thunderbolt ports are functional. RMA was arranged for us to ship the drives back to them for analysis and we hope that they will fix the problem.

We do a lot of video research and each drive is critical to our operation so dealing with the failed hard drive and with the replacement drives that arrived in unacceptable condition has really tarnished G-Technology's position in our book. We will definitely look to other external hard drive manufacturers for future purchases based on the poor system they have in place for handling drives covered under warranty.

Product worked great for 6 weeks--extremely fast and large capacity. Unfortunately, it suddenly and completely failed. I am replacing it through manufacturer, but it is a significant inconvenience to replace--significant wasted time and potential for lost data if I missed anything in backup. Have never before experienced such a short life span.

The drive died in less than a month. One of the RAID partitions failed spontaneously rendering the drive useless. Stay away from this drive if you care about your data.

Love the speed. Less than 3 hours to copy about 2TB (70,000 files) from one of these drives to another. If you need one, you need another one... Doesn't have to be used in RAID mode so you can use the full 4TB if you want to but plan to back up on to another drive. It comes configured in Raid 0 so it will behave like a single 4TB drive unless you change the Raid settings. Expensive but you can also buy a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor and back up to a Firewire 800 drive albeit at a MUCH slower rate i.e. more than 4 times slower but if you use a smart copy feature subsequent back ups will be less time-consuming. They are not quiet but they are not irritatingly noisy either, just the noise I would expect from a fast drive. It does not power down when not in use and it has an obvious bright white light at the front but it does have a power switch at the back, at least! It should come with a Thunderbolt cable, but it doesn't. Kensington security slot and it says that you can daisy-chain up to 6 devices. Time-machine ready. 2 Hitachi 7200 rpm drives inside, SATA II,III. 9.25" x 5.125" x 3.374" (LxWxH). 3 year limited warranty.
