Book Description

November 1, 2004
What is GAAK? It's like ET--With teeth. It's like The Gremlins if they came from outer space and had great comic timing. GAAK is what you get when you mix Steven Spielberg's "The Goonies" with equal parts of classic 50's style creature feature movies like "The Invaders from Mars". When aliens from outer space invade a small suburban town and hatch a fiendish plot to take over the earth and meet the original cast of "Star Trek", four misfit kids named Zach, Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs set out to save the world--And all before bedtime. After all, tonight's a school night. Story by Darryl Hughes, art by Monique MacNaughton

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A fresh take on classic themes. If Hughes' quirky humor or creepy horror stylings wasn't enough, MacNaughton's inks are stunning" -- The Sequential Tart, March 2004

5.0 out of 5 stars A CREATURE FEATURE FUN READ!!!, May 19, 2005
This review is from: GAAK (Paperback)
I loved GAAK. It reminded me of the days when I was a kid (and I hope I'm not giving my age away) when creature feature movies were fun. Back when you could count on mad scientists to whip up homemade monsters in their labs, aliens invaded the earth regularly, creatures still lived in black lagoons, you could set your watch by Godzilla rising up from the depths of the ocean to stomp on Tokyo, and Roger Corman ruled the B-Movie world. I miss that kind of joyous, tongue-in-cheek scifi/horror that you could only get in a drive-in theatre back in the day. I got that again with GAAK.

GAAK starts off just like those classic 50's, Roger Corman/drive-in movie style creature features. The U.S. military tracks a giant meteor on a collision course with earth where it crash lands on the outskirts of the small suburban town of Eden'sVille, Maryland, home of pre-teen friends geeky Zach, tomboyish Jemmy, genius nerd Plato, and wisecracking Chubs. Up late at night, Zach witnesses the meteors crash and the arrival of Gakk, a kooky, sort of Jim Carrey-esque lunar loony who makes quite the first impression with a hysterical, spot on William Shatner/Captain Kirk impression that lets you know immediately that this isn't your father's alien invasion adventure. This ones going to be funny. And Gakk isn't the only reason. Like something out of Dr. Strangelove, the equally outrageous General Patton and his long suffering sidekick Colonel Schultz prepare the army for what General Patton is certain is a coming alien invasion. And he's not the only one. After a series of mysterious disappearences of town locals, Zach convinces Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs that something weird is happening in Eden'sVille and that the meteor he saw is the cause. Taking a midnight bike ride into the unknown, the kids come face to face with the otherworldly truth and find that it's best to beware of things that go bump in the night--Because they bite!

As a scifi fan, "GAAK, Volume One" wet my appetite for what is to come with the follow up. And I'm sure that, like me, teen misfits Zach, Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs will put a smile on your face and tickle your funny bone as they overcome bullies, annoying big sisters, bratty little brothers, disbelieving adults, and all the pressures of being a kid in order to save their small suburban town of Eden'sVille and the world from invasion by kooky aliens from outer space. And you thought you had it rough when you were in the 6th grade. LOL! For scifi fans, GAAK is 50's style scifi, done with a Spielberg flair, and just a dash of Tim Burton weirdness for flavor. Two thumbs way up!!!
