Book Description

Year in and year out the football powerhouse Hert City Trojans import a ringer to fuel their championship charge, but their luck is about to change. In the small backwater town of Tsalagee, first-year coach Donny Doyle knows the only way he can fulfill his promise to unseat the Hert City juggernaut, is to beat them at their own GAME. But in his own recruit, the mammoth and powerful, yet troubled and ominous Leotis McKinley, Doyle finds more than he bargained for. Truman’s character-rich novel GAME spins an energetic tale around the intensity of small-town high school football in America. And yet, amid the fast-paced drive of the story, lies an account of the human spirit struggling through adversity and finding victory. Readers of any age or gender will feel the triumph, honor, and glory that comes from the…GAME.

“I couldn't put it down. [GAME] is really well written and the action kept me going until the end.”
- Fred W. Hoster, Executive Director, Dallas Fellowship of Christian Athletes

“A masterly written tale of rural football. Each character is richly portrayed...you feel like you are on the sidelines with these kids. GAME goes way beyond the game of high school football.”
- Brock Sawyer, Editor, Vype Magazine

“I thoroughly enjoyed [GAME]. I will tell other coaches about this book.”
- Gary Sanchez, President, New Mexico High School Coaches Association

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts a heart in football December 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Many reviews have said 'you don't have to like football to enjoy this book' and I suppose that's true. But loving HS football, and understanding plays being called and positions in the game make Truman's novel richer and a joy to read.

With all respect to the real-life characters involved in "The Blind Side", "GAME" is the fictional, action filled, non-chick-lit alternative. Uplifting, inspiring without being maudlin.

The synopsis is available, so I won't repeat the storyline...but the characters in GAME are what pull you in and keep you there, wrapped in small town Oklahoma high school football. From Coach Doyle to his young team members and especially his "recruits" with troubled lives, I found myself not only believing the characters but truly caring about them.

I recommended this book to a friend remarking that, during the first few chapters, Truman does skip back and forth in time--but instead of finding it distracting, I learned the depth of each young man in the novel. Eventually and inevitably, GAME ends up on a high school football field, circa 1970s Oklahoma.

This is an important note to some readers: I was nearly halfway through GAME before I recognized the absence of something; PROFANITY. Truman has written a book about HS football without finding a need to have anyone cursing. I'm no prude, but I found it remarkable that Truman has gathered all these men and boys in a sports setting and made it VERY realistic sans vulgarity. I mention it here, because it surely IS a book men and boys will enjoy, and you can feel safe in giving it as a gift to anyone from young adult on up.

I LOVED "Game". It IS about football, but it's even more about heart, fellowship and deciding to control your own destiny.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best July 26, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just finished reading Phil Truman's "Game". This book ranks up there with the best I've ever read. Phil has the ability to totally absorb you in his story as you experience first hand the full range of his characters' emotions. If I were still a business manager (I'm retired ) I would keep this book at my side and review it occasionally. It would provide me with more insight and inspiration than any self help book written plus it provides an excellent tool to help in team building, not just in sports but in all team applications.

I would agree with the reviews of "Game" by Dan Case and Robert Marshall and I am looking forward to Phil Truman's next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars You DO need to know the language of football! May 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading all the rave reviews of GAME, especially the ones that assured me that I wouldn't have to know how to play football for me to enjoy it, I was eager to read the book. However, I nearly gave up after struggling to understand what was going on in the first two chapters when play by play descriptions were given. When I got to Doyle's story, I was able to see what everyone was talking about because the writing was indeed excellent, with gripping emotions and superb vivid imagery. All of the characters had sharply defined and three-dimensional personalities along with distinctive, individualized speech patterns. But -- and it's a big "but" -- I still ended up only understanding about half of the book which was extremely frustrating! I've never seen a live football game and I wouldn't understand what was going on if I did without someone next to me explaining everything that happened. (My husband is a brilliant scientist and does not follow any team sport so, unlike some of the reviewers, he was not a source I could use.) I would highly recommend GAME to anyone who at least knows the language of football, whether a fan or not, irregardless of gender or age, because (from what I could understand) it is a fantastic book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Game" a gift giver!! November 23, 2008
Format:Paperback
Need a fun evening or on-the-go type read? Then try "Game" by Phil Truman. Anyone from small town to suburbs will nod in agreement at the portrayal of high school football and its affects on every layer of local life--from the field, to the diner, to shopping, to home, and even the pew! You will grin and identify with the immersion of the "Game" on life. Phil has created some characters you will want to catch up with each day as you experience their struggles and accomplishments, their goodness, and those seemingly forever locked and bitter by choice. "Game" is a very amusing read that when finished will make you want to have another chapter with town characters. I have given this books as birthday gifts, Christmas presents, and even to a favorite coach friend. Hmmm--I think I am going to enjoy myself with a reread of "Game".

Smiling, Linda

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, love Leotis, he made the book for me. February 22, 2012
By Scott
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a high school football coach and fellow author in the sports genre, I decided to check out the "competition" and took a chance on Game. I absolutely became hooked on the Leotis character, which is very well developed and believable. As much as I enjoy game time descriptions of touchdown drives and wins, books of this nature have to offer more, and this does.

The "local" become characters themselves, which paints a great picture of the time and town. I've never been to Oklahoma, but I could feel "Oklahoma" through the writing.

I recommmend this book to "football lovers" with enthusiasm for the sport. Well done, sir.

4.0 out of 5 stars vintage hs football tale
No surprises here, but decent character development. The really-hostile team was a bit over the top, but our home team, coaches and players both, had personality and integrity.
