Holds well, should be more solid though,

This review is from: GARMIN 010-10457-00 Windshield Mount with Suction Cup (for GPSMAP 60 Series) (Electronics)
This mount holds your 60xx gps as promised (I'm using it with the newer gpsmap 60csx with no issues). There is a "jacket" that snaps onto your device and the jacket then attaches to the mount via a quick release (incidentally, this jacket is the same as used in the 60xx.. bike mount). The entire construction won't fall off the windshield as another reviewer has stated - I've tried this in Vermont (<30F) and Miami (>80F) and actually had a hard time removing the mount when returning the rental car.
I did find two nuisances though: - if you mount the gps a little higher so that the bottom does not touch the dashboard, you'll find that it's not that steady; the unit bounces slightly while you drive, making it harder to read directions - you can't mount the unit anything but vertically. You may think that that's ok, but the gpsmap60csx that I own is *much* more readable when the sun shines into its display, such as when holding it almost level. An extra 20 deg tilt would make all the difference between an always- readable display and one that needs backlighting even in daylight.

The suction cup works fine...... just don't leave it in the car parked for extended periods of time, with the gps attached. The heat the inside of the car generates loosens the suction, only sometimes. Other than that it works just great.

This product gets the job done. When placed on a clean windshield it will stay on even during off-roading. One thing that is missing is the ability to adjust the bracket sideways.

After reading the previous reviews, we were quite tentative about purchasing this, and were expecting to probably return it. But we needed something that moves from car to car so we decided to try it. It is solid, doesn't move at all. Works quite well. We can't seem to figure out why anyone would have problems with it - unless maybe they tried to suction the bracket to a dirty windshield or something. Simply follow the directions and it works very well. We are more then satisfied.

I am very impressed with this mounting bracket; it works much better than I thought it would. It is built solid and is very easy to figure out. The suction cup device works great and provides for a very secure hold on any glass surface. I've read some reviews that mentioned the need of mounting the bracket down low so that the GPS unit rests on top of the dashboard for stability to keep it from bouncing when driving. I can confirm that this is indeed a problem. The first time I tried this was at night and I didn't notice it straight off. But the next day in the daylight, the bouncing and shaking was very noticeable. I do wish there was an adjustment to allow the unit to pivot to the left or right along the vertical axis. This would be a huge improvement as it would help to adjust the unit to avoid problems with glare and reflections on the face of the GPS unit. All in all, I am very pleased with this product and I was thinking about purchasing a second one for the other car. However, this one is so easy to mount and take down it's not really necessary to purchase another one. This one is a real keeper.

First off, it does what you'd expect: it lets you mount your receiver on your windsheld. I use the 60CSx and it works perfectly.
The suction cup has a little switch which lets you flip between light suction and full suction, a big plus for when you're trying to position it vs. when you want to keep it in place. Even with both knobs locked down, the receiver will vibrate quite a bit when driving, not enough to make it unusable, but enough to be slightly annoying. You can rotate the receiver in the cradle radially (like the hands of a clock) but not side to side if you wanted it to face the driver or the passenger. In order to mount the receiver, you need to screw the little thing onto the back that comes with the receiver's belt clip. That's what the ring at the top of the holder is for. The clamp at the bottom which locks the receiver in place is very tight, but it probably should be. It does take a somewhat considerable amount of effort to remove the receiver by pulling down on the clamp and letting the receiver pop out. One thing to note is that the cigarette lighter adapter's cable is designed in such a way that it goes down the back of the receiver, not off to the side or straight backwards towards the windsheld. Thus, the mounting bracket wing (one of the two arms that holds the receiver on either side) gets in the way of the cable. To get around this, you have to first mount the receiver in place, THEN attach the power cable. When you pull the receiver out, it will automatically push the power cable out in the process. It's not perfect, but it does the job and certainly beats the alternative of laying the receiver down somewhere and not being able to see it easily.

What a disappointment. I can't believe Garmin would sell such an inferior product.
The mount is so flimsy that the GPS constantly vibrates while driving. Since the mount only offers only limited adjustments, I had a really hard time positioning it to a decent viewing angle in 3 or 4 different vehicles. The adjustment screws don't stay tight, which causes the GPS to spin 90 degrees. Of course, this only happens if the suction cup holds long enough. Most times, the suction cup loses its grip causing the whole shebang to fall off the windshield. My nearly new, pristine 60CSx got a nice scratch on the screen the other day when this happened. Needless to say, I am not happy. Besides being an annoyance, this is also unsafe if it happens while you're driving down the road. Do yourself a favor. Spend a few bucks more and get a RAM Mounting Systems Suction Cup Mount for Garmin GPS 60, GPSMAP 60, 60C, 60CS, 60CX, 60CSx instead of this garbage. I am ordering mine as soon as I finish writing this up.

Works well in car, and also fits with Large Rail Mount for bicycle,

I just got back from a driving trip, and the mount is great. It sticks firmly to the window, and having it right by the windshield produces excellent reception. I didn't notice much vibration, and it certainly didn't bother me. The real motivation for getting this, though, was to use the plate with the Large Rail Mount on my bicycle. I can report that this works great as well, so I don't have to buy the bicycle mount, just the Large Rail Mount adapter.

I purchased a Jeep Liberty a few months ago and because there's no space for a dashboard mount, I decided to try the windshield mount - despite having read the poor reviews. I figured "well, maybe some people just didn't clean the suction cup and windshield beforehand", etc... couldn't be *that* bad, could it? In a nutshell, it is. I cleaned both with a mild soapy solution, with windex, plain water, tried applying it in moist, wet, and dry conditions, etc... the small suction cup simply isn't capable of securely holding the mount in place over a prolonged period of time. Sometimes the GPS would fall after a half hour, usually within a few hours, other times I'll get in the car only to find the mount and GPS laying on the floor.
The mount isn't worth it in my opinion, and I'll be looking for something else. I've even already considered *gluing* the mount to the windshield. I love Garmin and their line of GPS units, they make some amazing products. But unfortunately their windshield mount isn't one of them.

I ordered this to mount my 60CSx GPS unit to the winshield of my 2003 Taurus. I could not get it to stay for more than a few minutes with NO load - just the mount by itself. It seemed to be pretty firm at first, but within 5 minutes it would fall off.
I am sure the windshield and suction cup itself were clean, so that is not the issue. The suction cup can be attached to the frame two ways depending on the windshield angle, but I tried both ways and neither worked, so that is not the issue. I tried several locations on the windshield and none worked, so that is not the issue. The temperature varied from 0 to 45 degrees F during the time period I was trying this. The temp did not seem to have an effect. If anything, it may have stayed longer at 0 degrees. I understand there are several reviews claiming that it sticks to windshields well. I'm not doubting them, I'm just telling you my experience. Because of this, I'm suspecting my particular unit was faulty, although there were no visible nicks or scratches in the suction cup that I could see. I have returned this to Amazon, we'll see if they give me any hassle. It is impossible to open the package without cutting it open. I plan on ordering the mount that permanently attaches to my dashboard. I travel a lot, so that may be a better option anyway. **Update on refund** Amazon refunded it with no problems. |
