Product Description

GARY LEWIS AND THE PLAYBOYS, CO-SIGNED BY: GARY LEWIS, DAVID COSTELL, ALLAN RAMSEY, DAVE WALKER, JOHN WEST Signed publicity photo of the band that sung the No. 1 hit This Diamond Ring Photograph signed "David Costell", "Dave Walker", "Gary Lewis", "John R. West" and "Allan Ramsay". B/w, 8x10. Gary Lewis and the Playboys are a pop music group fronted by Gary Lewis, son of actor/comedian Jerry Lewis. The band formed in 1964, and their first gig was Disneyland; the band claims they didn't tell the management about Lewis' famous father. Producer Snuff Garret discovered them through big band leader Les Brown, who knew Jerry Lewis and thought the father's famous name could help sell records. The band made it to stardom after a 1965 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. They had a No. 1 hit in This Diamond Ring and 16 other Top 40 Hits, eight gold singles and four gold albums, but only Lewis and keyboardist/accordionist John Lewis remained in the band after 1965. The band broke up when Lewis entered military service in 1967, but has since reformed and performs on his father's Labor Day telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. LEWIS, born in 1945, was drummer and nominally the lead singer. He received his first set of drums in his early teen years and formed the Playboys from his friends. Cash Box magazine voted him 1965 Male Vocalist of the Year; Lewis beat out acts like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra for this honor. He was the only artist in the 1960's to chart his first seven releases on Billboard's Top 10 list. RAMSAY (1943-1985) played bass for the band. He became a ham radio operator and flew for Northesast Airways in Morristown, New Jersey after leaving the Playboys. He died in a plane crash. Lightly creased and spotted. Corners are lightly rounded. Small crease on bottom and right edge. Otherwise in fine condition. For more information contact HistoryForSale. DOCUMENT 277421
