This review is from: GAUGIN CROWN ART LIB (Crown Art Library) (Hardcover)
The writer of this volume is a former curator at the Louvre. He seems to understand artists, creative motivation, genres, influences, and to write about them in clear, concise vocabulary. His writings on images and ideas are inspirational and lift art above contemporary emphasis on $ values.

ones sees tons of these kinds of books at barnes and chernobyl, borders etc...but this one IS unique...first the reproduction quality (at least my edition) is excelent...the b&w drawings are on a more off-white background. the essay is very centered on the more PRIMAL elements of guaguin's mission. very good analysis of the IDOL (TIKI) and how it replaces GOD for gauguin. perhaps a good model for us all. yes, set up your shrine now in your own way and sweat off the accretions of western theology...now
