Works well for my asthma .,

I have a lot of sensitivity to smoke. I live in a development with a lot of fireplaces. These days people use fireplaces to save money on high fuel bills. Fireplace smoke is just about the worst irritant for me. I have 2 of these machines if I fire them up they work for me. No other machine I have owned have worked as well. They cost but they work. I can be inhaler free if I choose to. The machine costs less then steroids do plus no side effects. If you know your neighbors fireplace bothers you this is worth a try. I went back and looked at the older review of one star the buyer states he got 4 charcoal filters for 1200 bucks. This review is not accurate. The filters contain far more chemical then charcoal. I know because I built my own charcoal/carbon filters from activated charcoal. While my activated charcoal filters help with fireplace smoke they are not good enough. Unfortunately if you have chemical sensitivities to air charcoal alone will not do the trick. Charcoal/carbon and hepa filter is also not good enough. Personally I look to buy these used on e b a y . I then put new filters in them from amazon. Saves some money. It is nice to wake up in the morning and breath in clean air. It is nice to feel open clear lungs. Later this week I will try to find the other chemicals used in these filters.

The reason to buy this thing is because we smoke. We don't want to impose second hand smoke to any neighbor, so we tightly sealed the doors, the electrical outlets, and everything, but, when we left the draft between the hallway and our apartment sent some odor out, and though nobody complained, I hated it.This product is amazing. Our apartment is around 1000 sqf. We tried other so-called HEPA filters, and spent almost $1000 in useless devices that went to the trash. This is the one. Up to level 3, it's barely audible (though we live in Manhattan, and the noise here is awful). From level 4 and on, it starts to be annoying. However, we only set it that high when we leave the apartment, and when we're back we set it on 3. There's not a single trace of odor when we arrive. Be careful with the carbon filters when you unpack them, there's some carbon leaks from the filters and you can get that micro powder everywhere. Besides that, the unpacking+assembly took me around 5 minutes.

I'm puzzled by the reviews with one star for this product. This machine worth every penny that I paid for it and the filters. It doesn't just clean the air a bit, it changed my life. As for the claim of it not sucking perfume out the air -- it will suck ANY chemical out of the air. It can't suck perfume out of fabric or clothing though. You will absolutely tell a remarkable difference in the air you breathe. I feel fantastic since using it! Keep in mind that it can only cover so many square feet. I have a studio apartment and it works great. Otherwise, you'll need to let it run at night and maybe keep the bedroom door closed. You'll love it though.

I spent the extra money for this item, expecting that it would filter out perfumes and other chemical odors, however, it is simply recirculating them instead. I can smell the perfume in the "clean" air coming out of the filter, and also smell it when I open the filter to check the cartidges.

This air cleaner has one HEPA pre-filter (class 11), four gas phase filters, and each gas phase filter has it's own pre-filter. It's HEPA may only be rated at 98% 0.3 microns and 95% at 0.003 microns, but it does an amazing job. You also have to remember that those HEPA ratings are based on a single pass. It's going to be continuously passing (forcing) the room air through those filters, so it's more like 99.99999% in the long run if you don't recontaminate the room. Since it has a blower built into it, and not so much a fan, but a blower and sealed housing, it does an amazing job at forcing air through the filters.I've owned AllerAir, and BlueAir units and actually still run them in separate rooms. This IQAir is in the room I sleep in. It's FAR superior to any other air filter I've had in the past and present. What good is a high class HEPA filter if the unit doesn't have the CFM to suck the air in the room through all those filters? So many other units I've had didn't have the horsepower to actually clean the air. I sprayed cologne in the air and in 5-10 minutes you couldn't smell it anymore. The cologne I sprayed would typically continue to smell on your person for 6-8 hours after applying it (it lasts a full typical day). If this unit can absorb that it can absorb any smell. I can't smell anything in my room. It's the cleanest air I've ever had, indoors and out!

I'm in my second year of dealing with my neighbor's unbelievably bitter, nasty fireplace smoke. He's down on his luck and burns wood in an old stove. Things are so bad, I may buy him a new furnace but he hasn't paid his mortgage and I don't feel like giving the bank a new central heating system. What you need know about this unit. I assume you know anything under $350-400 is worthless. Oreck, Sharper Image, Seen On TV, Ronco, Popeil etc. are of no value whatsoever. Honeywell units with charcoal have the right idea but at that price, you don't get enough charcoal to last for more than a few weeks. I started my odyssey with a AustinAir which is pretty good for the money but the wood smoke killed the 2-year filter in 6 weeks. (Note that AA now has a HealthMate Plus that has potassium permanganate and should do a better job with smoke). Long story short, I finally forked over the money for the IQAir and haven't looked back. This year, I'm getting a second unit while I wait for the bank to foreclose on my neighbor. There really isn't anything bad to say about the IQ Multi-Gas but in my experience, it puts out a sort of "sweet" smell. Almost like vanilla. I'm not crazy about it but it's not a problem. It might be, if you have extreme sensitivity, though. One other thing; although the IQAir costs a ton and as with all good units, the filters are $300, the IQ filters seem to really last. I'm starting my second winter on the original cylinders so it may turn out to be cheaper than the Austin Air in the long run. One other thing that may or may not be of interest. The IQ units disperse the "cleaned" air in a 360 pattern. So, wherever you position the unit, some of the output will be directed at you. At the highest speeds this can be a little drafty but not that much, since the air dispersed in all directions. In contrast, the Austin Air collects incoming air from all directions but disperses through a single opening on one side. Wisely, they've angled the slats so the air goes up and won't blow on you if you're in bed but still the Austin is more of a directional blower than the IQ Air.
