Two Phones -- One Jack,
By brad-the-dad (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GE 26955GE1 900 MHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base (Office Product)
Replaced 3 phones and a speaker (total of 4) with a GE 26955GE1 and a GE 26958GE1 (total of 4 phones). Both GEs consist of corded phone (which does require a wall-jack) and a cordless handset (which only requires power). After reviewing dozens of other models of 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz phones, I opted for these.Wanted corded units to ensure phones remained in the kitchen and computer room, and cordless handsets to roam the house. The cordless phones don't interfere with each other and are immune to the microwave in the kitchen (many 2.4 GHz models are reportedly effected by microwaves and fight with wireless LAN networks). Having Caller-ID in both the corded base and the handset is essential -- we don't answer "Unknown caller"s. The cordless is ideal next to your bed, the handset sits upright in its charger and the Caller-ID display is backlit -- it's easy to see at night. The Caller-ID on the base is hard to see from an angle -- you've got to be over top of it, not have it pushed to the back of your desk/table. Controls are easy to use, we use the Page/Intercom button to transfer calls between the house and the yard (we usually carry a cordless out to the spa or garage) -- and also to locate wayward handsets. Both corded and cordless handsets have volume controls and ringer-off switches. We've been able to get 4 people on the 4 phones with virtually no problem. Range of cordless is fine ... can reach the front mailbox and spa out back. Quality is great too ... no static. I'm a perfectionist though, here's where are the cons: During Christmas 2001, no literature was available on these models -- they are made by Thompson Consumer Products, part of the GE family now (Thompson CSF makes French Exocet anti-ship missiles).

A very decent phone,

Basically, this is a very good phone with a lot of features. The only thing that I found annoying is that when you use the cordless, the sound is not very crisp. Also, the battery doesn't last as long as I thought it should. You have to recharge it for about 12 hrs; meanwhile, my Panasonic only has to recharge for 4 hrs. The reason I bought this phone is you get speakerphone, corded base and a cordless all for the price for one. As far as my experience with cordless phones (I have a Sony, Panasonic and a GE), Panasonic is the best. After using the phone for about a month, the delete function for the caller id on the base didn't work. I sent the whole thing back to Thomson electronics. They told me it would take 4 to 8 weeks to fix. But then, two weeks later, I received a brand new phone in the mail. That was definitely a surprise. I guess it's cheaper for them to send me a new one than to fix my old one. I have to say my experience with them is not bad at all.

I was realy looking for some specific features in a phone and was frustrated until I found this beauty. Either they had some but not all the features I wanted or added features I didn't want or need. I wanted a corded phone because I found that reception with a cordless was so bad in my basement apartment and hated the cordless batteries that always seemed to need to be charged too much. Then again I wanted a cordless for the convienence but I also wanted a speaker phone for those long "on hold" calls. I especially wanted a phone that had a back-lit caller ID display and I did not want an answering machine as I had voicemail through my local phone company. All this seemed like a tall order and of course I didn't want to spend $100's of dollars. This phone met all these requirements and more at a great price and the cordless part is static free with a long battery life. This is my only review I've ever written but I felt I just needed to. This phone is awesome!!
