5.0 out of 5 stars reliable and simple
I used this phone for a little over a year and was very satisfied with it. Just sold it because I'm moving up to the 2.4 GHz frequency. This phone is very simple in appearance and it is very easy to use! If you hold down the Play/Stop button for the answering machine it rattles off all of the instructions for using the phone, so the manual isn't even needed! The sound...

We've had this phone for over 3 years. We have had several problems with it that started within that first year. Several of the dialing buttons have stopped being responsive, making it almost impossible to dial a number without dialing from another phone and then switching. A lot of times, I have a really hard time hearing people on the phone no matter what I do with the volume. Finally, if we happened to leave the phone off the hook overnight, the next time I tried to use it it was low battery.

I've had no problems with the answering machine - it is simple and easy to use, but I would avoid this phone if possible. I know another couple that bought this phone, and they've been having these same problems even after exchanging it for another one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad, bad phone..., October 11, 2001
This review is from: GE 26990GE1 900MHz Cordless Phone with Digital Answerer (Office Product)
I have had this phone/answering machine for about a year, and it just keeps getting worse. At first, I noticed that it was hard to hear people, and others complained that it was hard to hear me, too. The voice on the answering machine is also very soft when accessed remotely, so it is difficult to understand detailed messages. Then, over time, additional "features" appeared -- such as random bursts of LOUD static and periods of time when the phone just did not work. The static was almost painful, and my frustration peaked when I would "answer" the ringing phone, only to be greeted with a buzzing tone -- I had to run to other phones in the house to get the calls.

Now, the answering machine quit working. The machine picks up when someone calls, but the outgoing message does not play, the caller cannot leave a message, and it ties up my phone line until it resets itself (usually several hours).

Please avoid this phone (I would give it zero stars, if possible) -- you will save money in the long run by spending a little more up front. I am now shopping for a new one myself...

1.0 out of 5 stars horrible phone, January 12, 2005
This review is from: GE 26990GE1 900MHz Cordless Phone with Digital Answerer (Office Product)
Thank goodness this was a gift! It lasted only 1 year. The only good things I can say about this phone had was the reception and the remote access to messages.

The cons:
1)The handset: after 8 months, I began to have trouble dialing the numbers and now, if I want to dial a phone number that has a "5" in it, I have to bang it a few times and press it like 10 times to see if I'm lucky enough to get to dial the phone number. Also, I have missed several phone calls since the answer button works whenever it wants.
2) the battery: it doesn't last too long and it doesn't warn you battery is low.

hate this phone, and I especially don't recommend it for anyone with babies or toddlers because this phone can't take the abuse.

2.0 out of 5 stars Skip It, July 9, 2003

Pros: Nice looking, easy to use, good control from remote phones, feels solid, lasted 2 years and still same as new.

Cons: Occasional bizarre loss of connection with base (needs to be turned face-up in base for 10 seconds to reconnect!), 1 hour talk time between full charges (which is totally unacceptable), very poor message clarity.

I would just pass on this one even though it was relatively cheap for its day.

If you hold down the Play/Stop button for the answering machine it rattles off all of the instructions for using the phone, so the manual isn't even needed! The sound quality from the handset I have found to be very good. I think there are 5 different levels of volume. The answering machine is clear, but can be a little scratchy but this could be due to the caller's phone as well. Overall, this is a very good phone and I would recommend it to everyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good phone, bad answering machine, November 4, 2002

This review is from: GE 26990GE1 900MHz Cordless Phone with Digital Answerer (Office Product)
The telephone itself seems very well-made. I have not had any problems with reception, battery, volume etc... However, the answering machine is terrible. The recording quality is very poor, it sounds very tinny and weak. Whenever someone calls but hangs up before they leave a message, the machine records one anyway (a 5-second clicking noise). The message number light is very faint and goes off frequently. This makes it hard to know if there are any new messages if you don't have an audible beep. For a person on a tight budget, this phone might be acceptable, but otherwise, keep looking.

1.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for, August 24, 2001

Wow! A 900mhz cordless phone with digital answering machine for under ..., that's amazing! Sounds almost too good to be true. Well, it is too good to be true. The ... you pay is great for all the features, but one of the most important qualities of a telephone is lost in this product: hearing the other person's voice. Not only is it difficult to hear people you're speaking with, it is nearly impossible to hear most messages. Unfortunately, I've had the phone for almost 2 years, so I know what I'm talking about. While the range is impressive, and the features are easy to use, not being able to hear the voice on the other end clearly earns this phone 1 star.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the Price, Good Value., July 24, 2004

I have owned this phone for about 6 months. I am impressed with the very intuitive and easy to use layout of this Cordless Phone with Digital Answering Machine. It has excellent voice mail recording volume(settable)and sound. Setup instructions are also in voice and loud and clear.

It also has excellent receive volume(settable) and send volume is loud and clear, according to people I have called.

Voice mail is accessible remotely, when you are away, by calling your number, waiting for voicemail to answer, and entering your access 3 digit code. The phones default is 1,2,3 set at the factory and when you remove power. To set a unique code, pick up on-hook headset, press ANSWER, press * digit, enter 3 digit code, press * digit again. There is a small sticker on my phone on how to set Access Code.

The reason I did not give this attractive, easy to use, and full featured (except for Speakerphone and Caller ID functions)phone 5 stars is the receive voice quality, although loud enough, was not as clear as I expected.

Price is very reasonable. Recommend

4.0 out of 5 stars DECIDE FOR YOURSELF!!, June 25, 2002

First off, I *had* this model of phone for 11 months. It was fried during a lightning storm. However, before that, it worked FOR ME flawlessly....up to the bitter end. It had simple features, the answering machine was adequate, the handset was very light-weight, the base was compact and could be wall mounted, I could hear the caller, the caller could hear me, etc. etc.

I think what is important to note here is that the phone was fine FOR ME. Maybe not for the other reviewers and maybe not for you. Don't read these reviews, for any phone, and then purchase the phone that has the best reviews. These reviews are so, so, so skewed. Buy your phone from a store that will let you return the phone for 100% of your money back with no questions asked should you not like the phone. That way YOU can find the phone that is right for YOU! Don't listen to me, don't listen to these other people. LISTEN TO YOURSELF!

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Bad for General Electric, November 22, 2002

I actually tried a second GE model telephone answering machine after the first one failed. Never again. Too bad for GE. Too bad for America.

I was very careful to follow instructions about charging the battery, but the handset always failed and replacement batteries didn't help. Just using the unit as an answering machine didn't even work, as running the telephone line through this product caused other mishaps. We couldn't connect to the internet if the phone was connected. It was so bad that even when it wasn't in use it somehow wrecked other things connected to the telephone lines.

It finally gave us great satisfaction the day we threw it out.
