Although this is a good tool for trouble shooting or inspecting electrical outlets, Amazon also sells GE 50957 GFCI Tester for Proper Installation/Operation 110-125V that does everything this tester does and adds GFIC testing for only 5 dollars more.

Believe it or not, this is something I've used for years as an IT guy.
It's very handy for quickly checking for grounding issues on outlets that an expensive PC or Large pricey HD TV would have precariously been plugged into. It's not terribly surprising how many expensive pieces of electronic equipment could have been saved over the years if someone had just checked the outlet first.
2 Yellow lights or it's a NO-GO situation.
This even saved me from purchasing a badly wired home once.

This one has served me well for years. If it ever dies, I'll be buying another.

I have used this a couple of times. So far only on correctly wired outlets. Lights up and works just fine. I have also used it in correctly wired GFI outlets and it seems to work in those as well (I also have a GFI tester, but I assume the only difference there is it has a button to throw the circuit).

This will tell you if an outlet is grounded and if neutral and live wires are in the standard slots. This information is useful because correct wiring provides a margin of safety in the event that the electric devices you are using are damaged or defective. It may or may not help if your house is struck by lightning. If you pay to have an electric outlet installed you can use this to verify if it was done correctly without opening up the box and looking. Be careful and don't mess with the electric stuff if you don't know what you're doing. Hire a professional. Get it done right. This can verify that basic details were handled properly, or not.

I already knew I had some electrical issues to deal with at home, and with this tool, it makes it really easy to determine what is wrong, and how to fix it.

My primary problem is that the idiot who I bought this house from, when he finished the basement himself, he cut off almost all the ground wires from the receptacles. I had no clue until I bought a battery backup system for my computers, and the sucker would not work because it detected no ground. I then brought in an electrician who fixed the problems in my "man cave", and added a brand new dedicated circuit in addition, as well as put in my coax for my internet connection. He also fixed the bathroom outlet as that was the most dangerous not to be grounded. But, I wanted to do the rest of the outlets, and as I bought all new plugs with built in ground fault detection, I am doing two birds with one stone.

With this device, I can not only detect the problem circuits, but when I switch them off at the box, I can make sure I turned off the one I need to work on.

Oh, I got one surprise when I checked all the upstairs wiring... one had the hot and neutral flipped. Nice to be able to find such issues easily.

The indicators are easy to read and labeled clearly. Someone, like me, who does not know that much about electrical wiring would have no problem interpreting the readout. Also, the what the lights mean are spelled out clearly righting the frnt of the item so you don't have to refer to paperwork or learn what different light combinations mean. The lights could be a bit brighter, in direct sunlight you have to shade the product to tell which lights are on, otherwise would be five stars.
