We've had it for over a month and it works great.
Mike from Chicago
It took me a few tries to get this thing programmed the way I wanted, even while reading the manual (I know, I never read those but I had to this time).
JB
I didn't find it hard to program and the directions were easy to follow (although I figured it out without the directions).

*UPDATE 2014-06-16*

I bought another one last week, and the instruction that comes with the unit has all the latest information. It says this about the Random Setting:
* When the timer is at clock display status, press and hold HOUR button for 3 seconds or more to turn on or off the random function. "RND" will be shown in the LCD when activated.
* Random function is only valid for the programmed setting time period.
* Random ON/OFF time generally will be 2-30 minutes postponed based on programmed setting time. If programmed setting time duration is below 10 minutes, RND will be shown in the display, but in fact, it is not valid, the appliance will be switched ON/OFF as per programmed setting time only.

Disregarding some grammar weirdness, I think it's fairly clear, although I still wonder if it'll postpone things past the OFF time. For example, if ON at 10:00 and OFF at 10:10, will it start as late as 10:30 and end as late as 10:40? I'd guess so. Obviously, if OFF is set to 10:09, random function won't take effect because the duration is only 9 minutes.

--original review below--

The manual it came with only describes the old model (15150), even though it states both model numbers (15150 and 15154). Note the old model doesn't have "random" and "DST" features.

I had to search the web, cross-reference with other models, and experiment to figure out how the "random" feature works.

First, you can toggle "random" mode by pressing and holding HOUR/RND button for 3 seconds. A tiny (RND) indicator is visible on the LCD display when the feature is enabled. In random mode, it distorts your programmed ON/OFF time by +/- 0 to 30 minutes.

This is a decent digital timer. It allows 20 different daily on/off hour/minute settings. Each of these on/off settings can be applied to different weekday and/or weekend combinations so that I can have different daily program with some or all of these 20 on/off settings for each day of the week which means it can have at most weekly 7x20 on/off settings. It has internal chargeable battery so I don't need to worry about the power outage to mess up my settings, or replacing batteries. If not used as a timer it can be simply used as a digital clock. It is specified at 8 A and 125 V for general use which means you cannot connect it to an appliance that consumes more than 1000 W. It is also specified at 125 V and 5 A for Tungsten, which equals to 625 W. I am not sure about what Tungsten is, maybe some welding thing? Anyway, before connecting an appliance to it, make sure it doesn't exceed its specification. A lamp or a cooker should be fine, but for a heater, it may burn this timer. Also, this timer has only polarized 2-prong socket, which means if your appliance's power cord has a 3-prong plug, then this is not for you.

One thing needs to point out is the instruction paper is not accurate about how to operate the timer. It mentions three settings: ON to remain on and ignore user's setting, OFF to remain off and ignore user's setting, and AUTO to follow user's settings. But actually when I click "ON/OFF" button, it will recycle the operating modes as ON, AUTO ON, OFF, AUTO OFF. There is no "AUTO" mode but either "AUTO ON" or "AUTO OFF" modes. If you set the operation mode to "AUTO OFF", although your lamp is off right now, the timer will turn it on when your next on setting time arrives and keep following any future on/off settings.

The instructions for the timer were complete, but a little confusing. Here are a few things I had to learn:

1. I couldn't figure out their instructions about 12H vs. 24H, but it was defaulted to 12H, so I left it.

2. The AM and PM are to the left, so be careful whenever you set the time.

3. After you go through the programming process, the last step is to set the time for it to turn your light off.

That's not the last step!!!

4. After you've set the time to turn your light off, you must select the correct day as well. If going from 8pm to 10pm, it's a no-brainer. Push the WEEK button and set it. But if you're going from 12:30am to 1:15am, you need to set it to turn your light off on the next day. This sounds elementary, but for some reason, it can get very confusing.

5. One more thing: The instructions say what to do with the ON/AUTO/OFF button. This button doesn't exist.

Use the "ON/OFF" button for these options:

"Off" - Self Explanatory.
"Auto On" - Ignores your settings and leaves the light on.
"Auto Off" - The timer uses your settings.

I'm at a bit of a loss to give this product a good review. I ordered three of them. They look exactly like the picture here on Amazon but if you look at this picture, it doesn't have the HOUR/RND button that a lot of reviewers are talking about. (there is a user posted picture with the HOUR/RND button but that's not what I received) From what I can tell, there are two models out there . . . an older 15150 and a newer 15154. Everybody seems to be saying that the newer model has the random feature and that holding the HOUR/RND button for three seconds turns it on. The model pictured above doesn't have the /RND part. Just the HOUR part. The ones I received are like this, no /RND, portion to the HOUR button . . . but on the packaging it clearly lists the part number as 15154 and on the unit itself, the sticker on the back shows 15154. I really want to think that I have a random timer but I can't, for the life of me, toggle the random feature on. I've tried holding the HOUR button down for 3 seconds (actually as long as 10 and 20 seconds as well) along with doing the same with other buttons wondering if perhaps something else might work. Interestingly enough, when I press the reset button down for a few seconds and the unit display goes blank, when it "reboots", for lack of a better term, all of the symbols on the LCD show up for just a second. During this moment I can see an "R" symbol to the right of the time display, similar to where the RND symbol is supposed to appear according to other reviews. I can't, however, seem to make this appear with any combination of button pushes for any duration of time.Read more ›
