Book Description

July 15, 2007

A new generation of locomotives for a changing world: greener, cleaner, and just as powerful. This book introduces readers to General Electric's Evolution Series, the company’s latest achievement in a long and distinguished history of locomotive design.

At the heart of the Evolution's success is the GEVO 12-cylinder engine, which produces the same horsepower as the old 16-cylinder FDL while using less fuel and reducing emissions.

Today’s most up-to-date railfans will want to read about the development, testing, production, and use of the locomotive that, in its first year of production, has already been ordered by every Class 1 railroad in North America.

Photographs and illustrations document the features and components of the Evolutions operating across the country, and interviews with GE and railroad personnel fill in the details of current operations and plans for what is certain to be the future of American rail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book for Railfans, April 23, 2008
This review is from: GE Evolution Locomotives (Hardcover)
This well written book is an excellent reference book that should be a part of every serious railfan's collection. Cover diagrams of the GE Evolution Series locomotives are only the beginning of a wealth of information about the GEVO origin, growth plan, testing, marketing and building of both the AC and DC series. Many great pictures of the locos in great railfan settings. Readers are given a full account of the GE Evolution Series locomotives and their GEVO powerplants. Focus is on the products that meet the EPA's more stringent "Tier 2" emissions regulation. This book also gives a rare view into the GE factory in Erie Pa.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice overview, lacking details., January 18, 2009
This review is from: GE Evolution Locomotives (Hardcover)
I got this book and read it pretty much all the way through the night I got it (so it must have been pretty good). I thought the general outline of the book was good in terms of covering the environment out of which the Evolution series came, some of the critical decisions they made, how they tested it, who has adopted it, and where they expect to take the platform in the future. Found some of the text a bit disjointed, like it didn't get edited as closely as it could have. And I found myself wanting more details then it provided (hey, I'm an engineer!).

5.0 out of 5 stars GE Evolution Locomotives, February 4, 2010

This review is from: GE Evolution Locomotives (Hardcover)
Hi!
This book was really interesting reading if you are interested in how diesel engines from GE have been progressing through the decades.
This writer Sean Graham-White is really good of what he is doing.
The book is very well written I must say. I could only find a few misspellings. It shows in a very thorough way how these fantastic machines have been developed through the decades with lots of good illustrative pictures and with just as good comments to these pictures.
The only thing that I am really missing is a summary chapter where you can see all these different variants of machines are put up in some kind of diagram or table. This, so it will be more easy to see the small changes of development as the evolution has been going forward of these massive machines.
But if I summary this book overall I can really recommend it for those who want to get some really thorough information of these machines. It is very "nutritious" of information. You need to read it at last two times to get most of this information into your head......
I was very pleased with this book I must say, so I can really recommend it.

Yours sincerely Mark from Sweden.
