I've been using dimmable CFL reflector bulbs since they first became available and have always found them to be problematic. I was hoping that these GE brand bulbs would perform better than the others that I have used but unfortunately they have not. 5 of the 6 bulbs that I purchased were defective. 3 of them had obvious manufacturing defects in that the metal base threading was deformed and they would not screw into the socket. 2 of them burned out within a few days of use. Fortunately Amazon.com is very good with returns/replacements. But, if this is any indication of overall quality and reliability, I'm not too optimistic that these bulbs will last 4 years as advertised.

Even when they are working, these bulbs are troublesome. As with most CFL's they take about a minute to reach full brightness. At full brightness they work just fine. But, dimming them is problematic. They may work better or worse depending upon the type of dimmer switch you are using. In any case, the dimming range is much less than incandescent bulbs. If you try to dim them past a certain point they will flicker or turn off completely. Also, if multiple bulbs are used on the same dimmer switch, the bulbs do not all dim consistently--some are brighter than others.

Congratulations! You came across the worst compact fluorescent (CF) light bulb. If you buy it, this will probably be your last purchase of CF light bulbs, because you will want to go back to good old incandescent bulbs. I think GE makes them in order to undermine transition to energy efficient lighting and boost sales of their incandescent bulbs.

1. NOT Dimmable.
Description is highly misleading. It says that this bulb is in fact dimmable, which is wrong because it works with dimmable switches but brightness of the bulb does not really change that much. It dims a little but not enough to make any difference. Dimmable range of this bulb is much smaller than for any incandescent light bulb, so GE, please don't call it dimmable.
2. Failed after two month.
One bulb out of three installed, died after two month of light use. I have about 30 compact fluorescent light bulbs in my house (only three of them made by GE) and not a single one failed yet. I will never buy GE compact fluorescent light bulb ever again, they are not as reliable as other brands. Description on the box says that it lasts four years! This is true only if you keep it in a box and never use it, but once you install, it only lasts two month.
3. Very looong warm-up time. This bulb takes about 2-3 minutes to reach the full brightness. Similar light bulb from Philips warms up in less than 10 seconds.

---Update 11/15/2010---
Out of 6 GE CFL bulbs only 3 are still working. I understand that my sample size is too small to make any statistically significant conclusions but 50% failure rate in less than 2 years, for light bulb that is "Guaranteed to last 4 years" is a bit too much. It says on the box that if bulb lasts less than 4 years GE will replace it for free. I will try to get a replacement from GE.

They take long time to warm up(about two minutes of dim light). Eventually they provide good lighting. The delay is annoying.

I wasn't really thrilled with these, but I wasn't surprised they failed either. The light itself was nice and warm, similar to incandescent which is what I prefer. I agree with the comments on the restricted dimming range. To be fair I suspect manufacturing a durable, dimmable cfl flood rated for cans is a greater challenge than making a simple cfl. In my experience, these types of bulbs aren't readily available. I had 2 that stopped working within a few weeks of each other a couple months shy of 2 years use. Who knows why they failed so soon but I speculate the following contributed to the shortened life:

1. when I looked at the packaging again it said they are ok for recessed lighting but NOT for totally enclosed cans which was how I used them - this was in the fine print though so I missed it when purchasing

2. once in awhile I turn lights on/off within a few minutes, it used to be this shortened the life of cfls (according to the GE website, they should always be left on for periods greater than 15 minutes for best life)

3. the dimmer was just what was there already, supposedly there are now dimmers rated for cfls (according to [...], there are some dimmable cfls that won't work with some incandescent dimmers)

Anyhow, I did keep the warranty stuff and GE honored it no questions asked by providing a voucher (1 for each bulb) for ANY package of GE light bulbs valued up to $15. I was happy with that considering I mistakenly used them in completely enclosed fixtures. I may try again but I will definitely leave the covers off and maybe go with a R30 instead to allow more ventilation.

I have several of these bulbs and they lasted less than a year with max 2 hours per day use. Shorter than a conventional halogen bulb. They dim as time goes on, definitely not worth purchasing and the warranty isn't worth pursuing. Find another brand.
