I replaced nine 50-watt halogen bulbs in an existing track light in my house, trying to get the better quality reading light promised by GE Reveal lights. The light quality is very good - bright and a very pleasing temperature. But within three months after installation, operating not more than a few hours a day, five of the nine bulbs failed. Our experience with 50w halogen bulbs like this has been more like 2-3 years in this kind of track setup. I'm hoping this is just a fluke - a bad batch of bulbs, but I only know the results I see. These are expensive bulbs and a failure rate over 50% in less than 90 days is unjustifiable even if it only affects some batches. I'm returning them, hopefully for credit rather than replacement.

The GU10 base bulb is more of a european design bayonet base bulb. Specifically it has two 5mm mushroom shaped pins that are on 10mm centers - you insert it and rotate about 40 degrees until it locks in place and thats it - no screw action required.

I agree with the negative review that while the GE reveal does have excellent spectrum, they never seem to come up to their life expectancy. A couple things can affect this.

1 - if you have say 10 bulbs on a single switch (500w) then if you do not replace them as they die, the voltage gets higher to the last bulb. ALWAYS replace bulbs asap so that the string voltage stays within the electrician's design specs.

2 - I use a lutron dimmer with soft start. I like this because most bulbs blow when they are turned on or off. With soft start, the bulb quickly (its programmable in the dimmer) ramps to full output or your last dimmer setting - your choice. The difference is the filament is not shocked by turning it on and i've seen that the bulbs on lutron dimmers do last longer. When you are talking a 10 dollar bulb thats important.

3 - the GE bulb has a reinforced UV cover to capture any bulb shards - halogen bulbs are presurized with a halogen gas inside the capsule of the bulb itself. The halogen causes the tungsten to redeposit back on the filament as it wants to boil off. Normal vacuum bulbs do not have this "forced redeposit" feature and the tungsten plates out on the glass envelope. This is not good.

Because the halogen process runs under pressure at high temperatures to get a bright white light, it is subject to explosion of the bulb capsule (a very small point source inside the bulb that actually sits at the focal point).

I bought three of these on September 25th and proceeded to install them on October 5th into one ceiling fixture. One of them just died today, January 7th. I'll report back here on the status of the other two but, based on my experience with other GE Reveal bulbs, the prognosis is not good. Incidentally, I had some generic and much-cheaper halogen bulbs in this fixture for a solid 1.5 years before replacing with the Reveal bulbs. And they were still going strong -- I replaced them because I wanted the natural spectrum lighting, not because they'd gone out.

I purchased 6 of them on November 14th. Already 3 have failed. The fixtures they are in are well-ventilated and not insulated, so it's not because the fixtures retain too much heat. Very disappointing. I do not recommend this product.
Also, on one of the bulbs that failed, the glue holding the tinted lens part of the bulb to the body of the bulb melted and the very hot lens fell from the ceiling to the work area of the person below, presenting the risk of burns and/or injury.

My husband and I suffer from seasonal affective disorder, what use to be called "the blues". In Oregon, the days get very dark with cloud cover and short. We have found that using full spectrum lights like this one, makes a huge difference in our moods during the winter. We have more energy and don't "crash" emotionally. These are hard to find in the stores now so we were quite relieved to find them on line. Well worth every penny. Love the brightness and the full spectrum of light, just like the sun.
