2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty cooktop -- but not for long, December 18, 2010

Sleek design, decent heat conduction -- but every time I use the cooktop more pits and scratches appear, even with very careful use and appropriate cookware. I've only had it a couple of weeks. I can't imagine how bad it will look in a couple of years. I almost wish I would have just gotten a new electric coil unit. At least then I could focus on cooking and not whether or not I am scratching the surface of the cooktop. If you have to have electric, this is a good one -- but be prepared to use a special cleaner and scrub pad, and accept that scratches are going to occur no matter what you do. If you can do gas... that would be my recommendation.

Last week I had my local GE store bring me all new GE appliances and I love them all except my cook top. Believe me, you will spend more time cleaning it than cooking on it. I have used it four times in one week and you'd think it would still look brand new especially with all care I've given it. NOT! I have read and followed exactly every direction given to me in the booklet by GE. GE says you must: Use only their cleaning product...I did. You must clean and scrub the bottom of your pots to remove any debris before cooking. I did. By the way...only designate their scrub pad for scrubbing your cooktop. Using the scrub pad for other jobs may cause debris to accumulate in the pad and scratch your cooktop. You must NOT move pots across the burner. I haven't. (By the way, what cooktop engineer in the GE corporation tells a good chef they can't do this?) When using the burner you must always pick the pot straight up and down. Well...doing just that has scratched and mared the surface of my cook top. Not to mention I've dedicated at least 15 minutes to cleaning the top after EVERY use! Clean, scrub, polish, wipe down. Clean, scrub, polish, wipe down. This sleek high maintenance beauty looks pretty for a couple of days...after that...you're screwed. GE should be ashamed and I should have done my due diligence. Check the internet out...this issue with this GE cook top has been going on for years. Buyer be aware of the smooth black ceramic cook top from good 'ole GE...
