1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk, October 15, 2008

This review is from: GE : WJRE5500GWW 27 Top-Load Washer
Bought one of these at Sears with a matching dryer. At the five month mark, the transmission failed in the washing machine. Sears replaced the machine with an identical one and within a month of delivery, the transmission failed in the replacement machine.

To Sears credit, they handled the problem very professionally. They replaced the second GE machine with a Maytag of my choosing. They even gave me the option of replacing the GE again if that was what I wanted. Yeah, right... this GE machine is one to stay away from.

Aside from the tranmission problem noted, the machine doesn't allow for much manual control. It seems overengineered at the expense of just getting the job done. For instance, if I wanted to let clothes soak by lifting the lid, as I did on our previous washer (a Kenmore), the GE would drain the tub after a few minutes. Also, the machine does an elaborate slow down procedure just before it shuts off, which sounds like a Star Trek sound effect. In lieu of the machine not accomplishing the basic task of operating without failing, these features seem dopey. Finally, the instruction manual is poorly written...

No wonder GE is tanking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy, November 4, 2009
This review is from: GE : WJRE5500GWW 27 Top-Load Washer
I have not had this machine long enough to experience mechanical problems and hope I don't have them. But the new technology with the short agitator is poor. I wouldn't buy this type of system in any brand. It tangles the clothes and yes I know how to load it. This can't be good for the clothes or sheets.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS WASHER, December 10, 2009

I just bought the GE with the low agitator thing in the middle last month (11/09). It is TERRIBLE. Clothes have to be washed twice sometimes, and at the very least I have to use the highest level water and rinse twice. It has ripped two items of clothing, which the repair guy thinks may have caught on the fabric softener dispenser. From the other reviews, if I wind up keeping this monstrosity, guess I'd be well advised to buy the extended warranty. What a disappointment. I had a GE Profile for 10 years without a single service call -- I figured this Profile would be the same. Guess again.

1.0 out of 5 stars G E has bad customer service, December 9, 2009
This review is from: GE : WJRE5500GWW 27 Top-Load Washer
I will never buy any G.E. product again. It cost me $99.95 to have a repair guy come out to look at my washing machine that was only two years old. I was told it was a little plastic piece that holds the washer timer in place broke off so the dial wouldn't sit correctly in place. To fix the problem I needed a new timer package at the cost of $100.95 and labor to put it in $154.15 for a grand total with just having the guy come out $355.05 just because a little plastic piece broke off. I called customer service they said they would send me the part for free but I still had to pay for the labor and the original guy coming out so now the total would be $254.10 I received the part and put it in myself in 15 minutes. All this for A LITTLE PLASTIC PIECE that broke off. When I had a problem with my Frigidaire dishwashers computer Frigidaire paid for a new computer plus labor I only paid $35.00 for a guy to come out to the house. G.E. makes its money gouging people for repairs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy, January 5, 2011
This review is from: GE : WJRE5500GWW 27 Top-Load Washer
I bought this washer in winter of 2008 as a replacement for a front loader (kenmore), which drive motor wore out after only 5 years. The cost to repair it was about 400$' so I decided to but a new top load instead ( I never liked the front loader, difficult to reach and always smelly). I bought this because it was rated a best buy by consumer reports. Of course after two months after the warranty, it started making a horrible scuffing noise. It cost 140$ and the repair man, basically just bent the support out of the way. I have read other reviews now, that said the supports are very cheaply made and the weight of the drum/clothes cause the whole support to fail. I am sure this is what happened with my washer, it has now started to leak and it is only 2.5 years old. I don't want to spend another 150$ on a repair visit, since the machine only cost 400$. I am not sure what to get next, but I will get the extended warranty, since I seem to kill washing machines ;)
