Editorial Reviews

One and Only Studio Album From the Legendary L.A. PunkersOne of the leading bands of the '70s Los Angeles punkscene, the Germs (Darby Crash, Pat Smear, Lorna Doom, and Don Bolles) only released one studio album before theuntimely death of lead singer Crash at the age of 22. Equalparts Sex Pistols and Iggy Pop, the band's legendary live showsbordered on chaos, with Crash having a tendency to coverhimself with whatever food was located nearby while divinginto the crowd whenever possible. The lone album the banddid manage to record, (GI), was produced by Joan Jett andfeatures 16 tracks of unbridled garage-punk bliss.Originally Released:1979 (Slash Records, SR-103)Genre:Rock Style:Punk * Pressed on 180-gram HQ heavy vinyl.* All original packaging.* Includes original lyric sheet insert.CreditsBass - Lorna DoomDrums - Don BollesEngineer - Pat BurnetteGuitar - Pat SmearProducer - Joan JettVocals - Darby CrashTracklistA1 What We Do Is Secret 0:41 A2 Communist Eyes 2:21 A3 Land Of Treason 2:02 A4 Richie Dagger's Crime 1:53 A5 Strange Notes 1:49 A6 American Leather 1:08 A7 Lexicon Devil 1:39 A8 Manimal 2:08 A9 Our Way 1:54 A10 We Must Bleed 2:48 B1 Media Blitz 1:28 B2 The Other Newest One 2:44 B3 Let's Pretend 2:27 B4 Dragon Lady 1:35 B5 The Slave 0:57 B6 Shut Down 9:30

5.0 out of 5 stars Why settle for this when MIA is still available?, July 21, 2009
This review is from: Gi (Jewl) (Audio CD)
Just wanted to point out that there's little reason to buy this CD when you can get the 'Germs MIA' CD which contains this entire album + the rest of Germs entire discography. I guess MIA costs a few dollars more... if you're pinching your pennies (and who isn't these days?) this one might be the way to go. But man, the idea of going without songs like No God, the first version of Lexicon Devil, or My Tunnel... that would suck.

EDIT: ...and now that this edition is finally unavailable, this review is irrelevant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking punk/HC album, September 21, 2007
By
Amazonian (San Francisco<P>San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GI (Vinyl)
This record somehow still sounds fresh and powerful almost thirty years after its release - a near-miracle of crystal-clear production and bristling tension. This record straddles the boundary between punk and hardcore; the tunes are mostly snarled, and sometimes off-beat, and the lyrics can have an almost visionary quality. When I heard it played during its debut week (at a college Tower Records), everyone seemed to stop still in their tracks.

This LP eschews melody for a kind of punk poetry - an approach more famously employed by fellow L.A. rockers X. But while X's songs were always informed by a rockabilly flavor, The Germs are almost indescribably disorganized and intense. Nut unlike their live gigs, there's that sense that everything is going to break apart at any moment. The production by Joan Jett helps keep the whole thing going.

It's easy to use the usual stream of adjectives to describe a favored record. This is one where the superlatives may very well fit.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Hardcore Punk LP Ever, December 11, 2008
By
Will Smith (Arlington, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GI (MP3 Download)
This LP came out in 1979 and was produced by Joan Jett. I love the song melodies and the music has some speed and force to it. Darby can't really sing and the band can't really play all that well but neither can alot of good or great song-writters. Then again, alot of technically accomplished musicians can't write to save their lives.

Anyway, this records is transcendent to me. It has all the growling, distortion, speed and other essential elements of a good punk rock record. It was just ahead of it's time.
