A more interesting movie than I expected. I'm a fan of all things Japanese, so I just put this on my watch list because I saw a kimono---and recognized the actress as France Nuyen. A couple of twisted love affairs form the central plot of this movie, which explores the complications of Japanese-American relations and attitudes in post WWII Japan. Laurence Harvey plays a displaced person of Chinese-Russian origins living in Tokyo and trying hard to obtain a visa for the US. He's an embittered character who uses people any way he can to obtain his goals. However, when Tamiko (Nuyen), a woman of aristocratic background, falls for him, he gradually has a change of heart. In spite of the beautiful settings of temples and countryside, this is not a feel good movie. It leaves you with things to think about.
