Book Description

Friends can be found in the most unlikely places . . . and alter your life forever...

In the early 1960s, four girls, as part of a 7th grade, nationwide school program, become pen pals. They have little in common but become lifelong friends who confront together the challenges girls confront in the world they confront them. Through their letters, we share their lives--their hopes and dreams, triumphs and defeats, joys and sorrows--and for all their differences, we discover that they are stronger and wiser for having and being friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Story of Outstanding Friendship March 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a wonderful accounting of four young girls as they grow into dynamic women! Initially connected by a writing assignment they grudgingly completed, four young girls become friends and eventually pillars of support as only true girlfriends can be to each other. It takes a deft hand to reveal such depth of character and plot through just the exchange of letters as the girls face challenges and celebrate successes, but Vicki Hinze nailed it! This novella is beautifully written, humorous and heartbreaking in turns. Letter writing itself is a lost art but Girl Talk: Letters Between Friends is a lovely reminder of the inherent value of writing - and staying connected - to those who matter most.

Fans of Elizabeth Berg's TALK BEFRORE SLEEP will enjoy GIRL TALK. This novella is sassy and funny, fiercely honest and heartbreaking. Told by letters exchanged through the years, the story captures the highs and lows of four friends as they move from girlhood to maturity. Every woman who cherishes her friends should read GIRL TALK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pen Pals..... March 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Who would've thought that you could so closely follow the lives of four young girls, all the way to adulthood, through something as simple as letters to each other?

This book is very well written. By reading the letters they write to each other, you get to experience their lives, happiness, sadness, triumphs and failures, and truly come to care for them all.

This book shows what we are missing today, with letter writing becoming such a dying art. It truly makes me want to sit down with a pad of paper and pen and start writing to everyone I know.

Absolutely wonderful story.

I loved how the book was written using only the letters they wrote to each other. This book had a very good story line and it really does remind you how far friendships can go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique premise for a story October 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is written as letters between four girls, starting as a seventh-grade school assignment and going until they are 40. You see snippets of their lives and, while they are very different people from each other, they help each other through life.

*WARNING: MAY CONTAIN POTENTIAL SPOILERS*

Girl Talk: Letters Between Friends chronicles the lives of four girls over the course of several decades through letters. There's Victoria, who has an unconditional love for children, Meg, who earns a degree in forestry while fleeing her abusive stepfather Harry, Patrice, who becomes a doctor but hates how her job is dominating her life, and Jacqueline (Jackie) who's a very passionate lawyer that sleeps around with married men.

What I liked was that the story was not told in the traditional way. By writing these letters, the characters share their highs, their lows, and everything in between with one another. I think the author handled this quite nicely. The only problem with this was the huge time gaps, which would sometimes span for months at a time. I found it heartwarming how what was first a school project between four middle school girls in the sixties grew into a camaraderie among middle-aged women in the 1980s.

I recommend this book if you're looking for a quick, fun read - but be wary: there is some profanity and suggestive themes.
