I first came across this case on ThinkGeek as it was on sale (perhaps still is) for $39.99, but it was the regular Gizmon iCA Black. I first thought it was really cool and I was pretty much decided that that was gonna be my new case. I've been going naked before just because the iPhone 4/4s is so sexy it that it was such a shame to cover it up, and plus I'm not the type of person with disastrous cell phone dropping tendencies (thank goodness & knocks on wood). This case though was enough to make me want to cover up my Precious. I did some research into the case, & came across the Photojojo listing for this "Rangefinder" along with 4 lenses (2x Telephoto, Fish-Eye, Wide Angle & Macro), and boy was I sold. I mean who wouldn't want to take even better photos with their iPhones? Anyhow, before committing to the $95.00 purchase, I decided to look on Amazon for possibly cheaper alternatives for the "Rangefinder" (I mean ThinkGeek was selling it for $39.99 and Photojojo was selling it for $55.00).
I came up with this pricier all black version! Well I chose the colorway over price on this matter, & through further Amazon spelunking, I found the lenses Photojojo bundles for $49.00 for about $22 (after shipping and tax) through 2 providers. I got the Patazon(TM) Camera Lens Kit for iPhone 4G 4S iPad Mobile Phones (Fish Eye Lens, Wide Angle, Micro Lens) and Silvery 2.0x Telephoto Lens For Apple ipad iPhone 4 4S 4G Camera Laptop HTC i9100 under the hopes that they were basically non Photojojo repackaged lenses, & by golly they were! Plus I got the Fish-Eye and Wide Angle/Macro lens in a matching black!... This case btw has a metal lined lens slot over the iPhone's camera lens so they work well with each other. I say well only because there is a bit of the lens appearing on your iPhone viewfinder and photos. There's always gonna be lens showing in the Fish-Eye (just a wee-bit more pronounced) and the Wide angle gets a slight bit of it at the edges. Luckily the Macro doesn't have that problem at all. I'm guessing the 2x Telephoto lens may have this problem when I get it (shipping was delayed a day or two due to Hurricane Sandy). I attribute this to the little bit of distance in the way of the lens and the iPhone lens due to the Gizmon casing. I don't mind it though. I can always crop it out if I really need, but I find that it adds that analog camera feel fitting of a "Rangefinder." To each his own.
Anyhow, back to the case. The case doesn't feel like a cheap plastic, as some others have noted (I'm speaking about reviews through out the internet and not just Amazon). The knobs to the top right and top left of the case are metal, but they aren't designed to turn (they're attached via a square plastic rivet which is set against one of the clips used to secured the top piece to the rest of the case, so turning it should result badly). I still haven't taken pictures at night with the flash on so I couldn't say whether the flash bounces back due to the case in photos (maybe if I remember, I'll come back and edit this review). The way that the top piece of this case snaps in, I'd be wary of using a camera strap to hold my iPhone around my neck. At the least I'd lean the top half downwards (as the top piece snaps in towards the bottom of the phone). Maybe a wrist strap on the dock side of the phone would suffice my needs. But you can't help but want to rock a camera strap like the one in the photos, so who knows. I just hope I won't find my phone dropping to the ground disastrously. Moving on, the case is really snug on your phone. I had on a Matte Ghost Armor shield on the back that I thought flush enough and non grippy enough to stand the case going over it, but it was a lost cause. I had to remove the shield to make way for the case. A front shield is no problem at all though. The normal mock lens could fit in a loose fitting pants pocket or a purse easily, while the thin mock lens has no problem sliding in and out of my pockets (given I only have my phone in there). The areas where you find threading on the case (the lens slot and the detachable tripod mount) are actually metal and not plastic. They seem to have integrated it into the plastic molding (almost as amazing a Unicorns surfing rainbows), so any gripes I've read about being super duper careful not to strip the plastic threading need to be put to rest. The tripod mount attaches to the case via a friction fit, so it shouldn't be left on unless using the tripod I suppose. The notches/holes for the camera strap rings (only camera strap rings are provided, no camera strap FYI) are made of plastic (hopefully strong enough plastic). Last bit of useful information I can think of is the headphone jack hole in the case is about twice the width of a headphone jack (not to be confused with twice the size of the headphone jack HOLE). So headphone jacks with that extra bit of metal on the end (that looks about double the width of the headphone jack male part) should be able to fit into this case with no problems.
I've read a review somewhere that the viewfinder/rangefinder on the Gizmon iCA is made of crap plastic that makes for nothing but a blurry semi transparent mess. That's crap. The only time you may find the viewfinder blurry is if you're looking at your subject then bring the rangefinder to your eye. Your eye will need to refocus. I don't know how some people survive in this cruel cruel world with the level of intelligence they display in their ignorant reviews, but I'm putting this review out in hopes of finding good karma reviews on future items I find myself inquisitive about. Lastly, if anyone is getting this case (or one of the other colorways), you should really consider completing the package by getting on of the magnetic lenses sold here on Amazon or even Photojojo.
Update 11/7/12: I got my Telephoto lens in the mail today and the lens does vignette the edges of the frame in photo mode. Video mode on the other hand doesn't offer/suffer from this. Ditto with the Wide Angle. Also, as you can see in the shot of the case from above, the rangefinder/viewfinder part of the case sticks out, so that acts as a sort of lay on the table design (whether intended or unintended). Also, I've just ordered the Joby Grip Tight Gorilla Pod Stand through Joby's website after much research. I wanted to be able to use a Gorilla Pod with my phone, but I didn't necessarily want to rely on the Studio Neat Glif Tripod Mount & Stand for iPhone 4 & 4S-like tripod mount attachment the iCA comes with (as is worries me whether it'll keep my phone secure in portrait mode on a Gorilla Pod). At first I found the iStabilizer Mount Smartphone Tripod Mount but it wouldn't fit over the slightly over 3" height of the iCA case. To be clear, the Grip Tight is listed to cover up to something like 2.75" but my conceived work-around was to simply remove the top bit of the iCA case when I need to use the Gorilla Pod Grip Tight. Perhaps this will help another like-minded soul.Read more ›
I wanted to like this case but I ended up sending it back. The problem for me was that the assembly was very complicated and the case was actually broken for me so part of it wouldn't disassemble for me to actually put the phone in the case. So I couldn't try it at all, but just handling It I could tell how fragile it was and how prone to breaking -- especially with the complicated and slow assembly/disassembly.
Good idea but bad execution. Either it has to be made of more durable material or it has to be simpler to insert and remove.
Works great as a camera case - has deceived many. Buttons can come off easily - standard Elmer's glue solves the problem. Would not recommend as a protective case - purely for decorative purposes.
The tripod adapter works okay - not sturdy enough to trust regularly.
This case is not compatible with full body Zagg shields - only front screen shield. The back screen is scraped off when you put on case. I learned this one the hard way...
the case itself was nice, bigger than i expected. very lightweight.. but the accesorries were missing. one lens was missing and the tripod stand was missing that was listed as "included" on the case.
